The Minstrel (or Minstrel for short) is a minor character in the 1959 Disney animated feature film Sleeping Beauty. He is one of King Stefan's servants, where he served as the maître d' of the castle.
Background[]
Personality[]
Although his personality is not studied enough, it is shown that he is loyal to King Stefan, no matter how easy or hard Stefan’s rules are. As the maître d' hotel of the royal household, Minstrel is mainly shown to love wine and music, while serving wine to any members of the castle, especially Kings Stefan and Hubert. Despite his loyalty to Stefan, Minstrel is also shown to be drunk and doesn’t show much intellect, as he probably often becomes very drunk behind Stefan's back and sleeps under the table, demonstrating that he’s not taking responsibilities as maǐtre d’ at times.
Physical appearance[]
Minstrel is shown to be a slender man with medium length light brown hair. He is shown to have a slender long pointy nose and darker eyebrows than his medium length hair. He shown to wear a yellow and orange (only with the stripes) shirt with a black color that matches his tunkhose. He is often shown holding his banjo.
Role in the film[]
As King Stefan and King Hubert wait for Princess Aurora to return, Hubert feels like celebrating and summons the Minstrel to serve them wine and play music for them as they sing and toast. While the two kings bicker about their plans, Minstrel secretly helps himself to a few drinks and ends up getting drunk and falls asleep under the table with his feet sticking out and his head inside the mandolin.
Later, when the fairies put everyone in the kingdom to sleep, Merryweather spots him after regaining consciousness, only to be put back to sleep by a wave of Merryweather's wand. Afterwards, Minstrel isn't seen again for the rest of the film. However, it can be assumed that he possibly wakes up from his slumber after Maleficent's demise and Prince Philip kissed Aurora, which breaks Maleficent's curse and saves Aurora and the whole citizens of the kingdom from their sleeping spell.
Trivia[]
