You idiot! This is Lamentis-1. The moon that planet is about to crash into and destroy. Of all of the apocalypses saved on that TemPad, this is the worst!
Sylvie to Loki

"Lamentis" is the third episode of the Disney+ streaming television series Loki. It was released on June 23, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Loki finds out The Variant's plans, but he has his own that will forever alter both their destinies.

Plot[]

In a flashback, the Variant uses her abilities to get inside of Hunter C-20's head to make her think that the two of them are lifelong friends. The Variant creates the fantasy of the two of them drinking margaritas at a bar and challenges C-20 to answer her questions under brain freeze. When C-20 accepts the challenge, the Variant interrogates her for information on the Time Keepers. C-20 recognizes the place in the fantasy the Variant created, but then realizes that the Variant is a stranger. As the Variant manages to convince C-20 that she is confused for being tired, outside the illusion, the Variant is at the Roxxcart superstore and sees Loki and the TVA arriving through the surveillance cameras.

In the present, Loki follows the Variant, who has returned to the TVA. The Variant attempts to enchant a Minuteman, only to realize that magic doesn't work inside the building. Despite this, she fights the Minutemen, pruning some of them with their own Time Sticks or simply knocking them out. Loki follows the trail of unconscious Minutemen the Variant left along her way. When they are facing each other, he asks her to ally with him, but she refuses. The two of them fight until Ravonna arrives to stop them, but Loki uses the TemPad the Variant is carrying to transport himself and the Variant somewhere else. They continue to fight over the TemPad, but the Variant realizes that the TemPad needs to be recharged just before Loki takes it from her hands and hides it using his magic. Then, she realizes that they had been transported to Lamentis-1 in the year 2077, an apocalypse in which the moon is on a collision course with its planet as it will slowly destroy it, killing everyone.

They both run for cover to escape the falling meteors hitting the moon, but the Variant refuses to be helped by Loki. Finding cover, the Variant attempts to enchant Loki to recover the TemPad but fails. Loki tells her that his mind is too strong to be under enchantments. Infuriated, the Variant explains that she had plans for the TVA which was "years" in the making. The two are then forced to form a truce to look for a charging station before planet is completely destroyed. The Variant refuses to be called as such or Loki, so she asks to be called "Sylvie". They realize that they have twelve hours before the decimation. Upon arriving at an abandoned town, they meet a homesteader that tells them that the majority of the people are headed for the Ark, which is only allowing the high class to enter. Loki uses his magic to disguise himself as a guard and Sylvie enchants one of them, allowing them to sneak aboard a train to the Ark.

Inside the train, they talk about their lives, Loki tells Sylvie how he learned magic from his mother, Frigga. When Sylvie asks if Frigga was really his mother, Loki replies that he was adopted and asks if Sylvie was too. To his surprise, Sylvie claims that she always knew she was adopted, but she barely remembers her mother, which Loki sympathizes with. Loki casts fireworks from his hand to show her the magic Frigga taught him and tells her and how his mother always believed in him. Loki asks Sylvie where she learned to do enchantments, in which she replies that she learned by herself. When she offers to show him how the enchantments work, Loki refuses, knowing she is trying to get into his head to make him return the TemPad.

They then remember the homesteader they encountered, and Loki states that it is a pity that the woman chose to stay behind to die, but Sylvie tells him that the lady was doing it for the love she had for her husband. When Loki asks her about her love life, Sylvie claims that she maintained a long-distance relationship with a postman while hiding within the apocalypsis. Sylvie asks him if he ever had any candidates to princesses or princes in his life, and Loki replies that he had both as he suspects that she also had both. He then explains that none of them felt real, which Sylvie agrees and claims that love must be mischief then. Loki disagrees with her claim but tells her that he would need to drink more in order to elaborate about the meaning of love. Sylvie reminds him that they are going to try steal the power source of the Ark to recharge the TemPad and advises that they should rest.

After Sylvie awakens from a nap, she finds a very drunken Loki dancing and singing in Asgardian with several other passengers. Sylvie sees that he is not using his disguise anymore and tries to warn him, but he only continues to sing for her. As Sylvie notices some people looking at Loki suspiciously, she approaches to tell him, but Loki has drank too much to care about anything. Loki tells her that he finally figured out the answer to the meaning of love. He tells her that love is like a dagger, a weapon to use and admire its beauty but it will also make the person bleed and ultimately will be revealed that it is not real. Sylvie replies that his metaphor is terrible, just before some guards appear demanding Loki to show his tickets. They are forced to fight the guards, but Loki gets thrown off the train, so Sylvie jumps after him.

Sylvie demands Loki to give the TemPad back to her, only to find out that it had been damaged when Loki fell from the train. Frustrated, Sylvie states that they are both dead without it and accuses Loki of not being a serious person because he compromised the mission when he got drunk. After her throwing a fit of rage, Loki realizes how she is upset and tries to comfort her. Sylvie states that everyone is going to die, including them both, when the moon crushes into the planet, but Loki asks about the Ark. Sylvie tells him that the Ark never leaves because it is also destroyed, however, Loki then points out that they could hijack the Ark and make it take off safely before the moon's destruction. Agreeing with this new plan, Sylvie seems to be recovered from her moment of fury.

On the way to the Ark, Sylvie explains how her enchantments work and how she has to create a fantasy from the memories of the person in the case of individuals with a strong mind. She tells him that Hunter C-20's mind was clouded and that in order to control her, she had to pull a memory from the years before she joined the TVA. With this, Sylvie inexplicably reveals that Hunter C-20 had a normal human life before the TVA, which surprises Loki as he was told that everyone working there was created by the Time Keepers. Loki realizes that the TVA workers are unaware of their past, as Sylvie explains that they are in fact all Variants. Hearing that the Ark is about to take off, they rush into the city and find a crowd surrounding the vessel. They help each other to escape from meteors that start to fall as the planet approaches the moon and fight together against guards to make it to the vessel. However, as they get near, a giant meteor falls and destroys the Ark. Seeing the last hope of escaping the apocalypse destroyed, Loki stands helplessly with the defeated inhabitants as Sylvie casually walks away.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode to not feature Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15 and Eugene Cordero as Casey. Tara Strong as Miss Minutes can briefly be heard and Owen Wilson as Mobius briefly appears in an archive footage, but they are both uncredited.
  • This episode was written by Bisha K. Ali, who is the showrunner, for the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.
  • During Sylvie's illusion in the beginning of the episode, she and Hunter C-20 are drinking from glass HippopotoMai-Tai mugs from the Trader Sam's bars of the Disney Parks.[1]
  • During the scene that Loki and Sylvie are discussing their love lives, she asks him if he ever had "would-be-princesses or perhaps, another prince", and he replies "A bit of both. I suspect the same as you", which confirms both of them as bisexual. The director of the series, Kate Herron, later also confirmed this on her twitter, stating that it was very important to her to acknowledge Loki as bisexual in the MCU.[2]
    • Sophia Di Martino, Sylvie's actress, also pointed out on her twitter how the lighting of this scene and on Lamentis-1 have the same colors as the bisexual flag, which she thinks Kate Herron has done intentionally.[3][4]
  • The Variant calls herself Sylvie and Loki constantly refers to her powers as "enchantments". According to the third episode of Marvel Studios: Assembled, "The Making of Loki", she is based on the character Sylvie Lushton (also known as the Enchantress) from the comics. In the comics, Sylvie Lushton is Loki's apprentice after he gave her magical powers.
    • Sylvie is also similar to Lady Loki, but both Sophia Di Martino and Kate Herron stated in interviews that Sylvie is not Lady Loki, despite also being a female version of Loki. They both explained that Sylvie is an original character with a brand new story and backstory, being unique and different to the comics.[5][6][7][8]
  • Sylvie claims that she kept a long distance relationship with a postman. While not stated, nor are there any clues to where in time or space, one major postman character was Willie Lumpkin who was a supporting character of the Fantastic Four.
  • The character of Corporal Hicks is named after Corporal Dwayne Hicks from the movie Aliens.
  • When Loki is drunk, singing and dancing in the train, he throws his glass on the floor and shouts "Another!", which is a reference to Thor doing the same in the Thor film.
    • During this scene, he also sings "Jeg Saler Min Ganger" in the language of Asgard, marking the first time this language is spoken in the MCU. The language used to create this song and the Asgardian language is Norwegian.[9]
  • During the final scene of this episode, while Sylvie and Loki are running to get to the Ark and are confronted by guards, it is noticed that they have the same fighting movements, mirroring each other. According to Sophia Di Martino, despite Sylvie being different from Tom Hiddleston's Loki, at times they do have similar physicality and choreographed fight scenes throughout the series, which were all purposely done.[4]
