Harold Rowe "Hal" Holbrook, Jr. was an American actor, known for playing Mitch Collins in the two-part The Wonderful World of Disney NBC telefilm The Wacky Zoo of Morgan City, the voice of Amphitryon, the adoptive father of Hercules, in the 1997 Disney animated feature film Hercules, and the voice of Mayday in Planes: Fire & Rescue, the 2014 sequel to the 2013 animated film Planes.
Holbrook was best known for his performance as the titular character in the one-man stage show Mark Twain Tonight!, which he developed and won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. Holbrook made his film debut in The Group and appeared in more films, like All the President's Men, Julia, The Fog, Creepshow, Wall Street, The Firm, Men of Honor, Into the Wild, Lincoln, That Evening Sun, and the Warner Bros. animated film Cats Don't Dance.
His work in television earned Holbrook twelve Emmy Award nominations, winning five. These appearances included The Bold Ones: The Lawyers and its spinoff, The Senator, Pueblo, Designing Women, Evening Shade, The West Wing, NCIS, ER, Sons of Anarchy, The Event, Bones, The Sopranos, and Grey's Anatomy. He also played Abraham Lincoln in Carl Sandburg's Lincoln and later, the miniseries North and South and North and South: Book II.
Holbrook retired from acting in 2017, due to failing health and passed away in 2021 at his home in Beverly Hills.
