Everyone knows that flowers are the best gossipers in the entire universe.
Mrs. Whatsit[src]

The Flowers are characters that appear in the 2018 Disney adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. They are sentient beings that live in the planet Uriel.

Background[]

These sentient flowers are shown to inhabit the planet Uriel and are shown to move, unlike any ordinary flower. They are shown to resemble orchids with a mixed coloration palette around their petals, making each flower identical to each other. According to Mrs. Whatsit, it is said that the flowers that live in Uriel are the best gossipers in the universe. While they do not speak like what regular humans do, they are capable of speaking their own language (which Mrs. Whatsit describes that the language they speak being "color"). Despite each not having a face, they are capable of helping Meg find her missing father.

In addition to this, they are also capable of using their own petals as wings, giving them the ability to fly. In spite of this, they are also capable of following Mrs. Which's orders when imminent danger occurs like when Calvin almost falls off Mrs. Whatsit in her creature form, where they are capable of working together in saving Calvin from falling to his death.

Role in the film[]

After Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin find themselves in Uriel through the act of tesseract, Meg happily explores the landscape and encounters a patch of flowers which become sentient. Mrs. Whatsit describes the flowers as the best gossipers in the entire universe as she suggests to Meg to ask the flowers if they saw her father by giving it a try. Meg uses her locket to show the flowers an image of her father, just as the flowers approach her. Mrs. Whatsit finds out that the flowers did see Meg's father tester at Uriel before he disappeared, just as Mrs. Whatsit decides to help Meg, Charles, and Calvin find the place where Meg's father went to as she transforms into a large flying creature to help Meg find her father. Mrs. Whatsit flies and follows the flowers to the spot where Meg's father would be.

Upon seeing darkness negatively affecting the light as Calvin begins to fall off, Mrs. Which commands the flowers to help save Calvin from falling to his death while Mrs. Who follows alongside the flowers to make sure Calvin is safe. The flowers then all float upwards and catch Calvin, preventing him from falling onto the ground just as Meg and Charles find out that Calvin is safe after all. The flowers all leave while Mrs. Which warns Meg that the patch of darkness is connected to the It, a malevolent being who spreads negativity throughout the universe. They do not appear again afterwards.

Trivia[]

  • The flowers were created exclusively for the 2018 film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time and do not appear in Madeleine L'Engle's original novel nor in the 2003 film adaptation. In the original source material, the flying creatures seen during the part where Mrs. Whatsit transforms into her creature form in a plan to help Meg, Calvin, and Charles are winged ungulate-like creatures resembling centaurs that are smaller than Mrs. Whatsit in her creature form.
  • According to concept art by Howard Swindell, some of the flowers are shown to have human-like faces located on their stems instead of being located on their capitulum, suggesting that they are early prototypes of the flowers before they were heavily modified to resemble orchids.[1]
