Ansel Elgort is an American actor, singer, and DJ, who, for Disney, played the supporting role of Tony in the 2021 live-action film West Side Story. Born to photographer Arthur Elgort and stage producer Grethe Barrett Holby, he began his acting career with a supporting role in the horror film Carrie.

Early life and education[]

Elgort was born on March 14, 1994 in New York City, New York to Arthur Elgort, a fashion photographer who has worked extensively for Vogue magazine, and Grethe Barrett Holby, an opera director. Named after prominent nature photographer Ansel Adams, he has Russian Jewish ancestry on his father's side and European ancestry on his mother's side. The third of three children, Elgort has two older siblings: sister Sophie, a fashion photographer, and brother Warren, a cinematographer.

At age nine, his mother took him to try out for the School of American Ballet, where he studied dance for five years. Elgort then started taking acting classes at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, where he performed in a rendition of Hairspray with schoolmate Kyle Jean-Baptiste and starred in the school's production of Guys and Dolls. During his time there, he also appeared in Teen Vogue alongside Polish model Jac Jagaciak as a part of an editorial photographed by his father.
