- So who am I to believe? Because, of the two of you last sons of Krypton, shockingly... General Zod is the one being forthright with me.
Superman (Volume 5) #12 is an issue of the series Superman (Volume 5) with a cover date of August, 2019. It was published on June 12, 2019.
Synopsis for "The Unity Saga: The House of El, Part 6"
General Zod has agreed to an alliance with Rogol Zaar and Jax-Ur, so they can hunt down and destroy Jor-El and his family. They have gathered intelligence about a trilateral space army that is preparing to attack Jor-El's ship and they believe they can use this opportunity to kill Jor-El, provided, of course, that his family does not intervene.
Unfortunately, for the intergalactic villains, the House of El has united to come to the aid of Jor-El. Supergirl and Krypto assist Superman and Superboy in defending Jor-El's ship against Rogol Zaar. Despite this, Superman remains confused as to why Zod would choose to help the monster that killed Krypton. After everything that's happened, Superman doesn't need a fight. He needs answers. Rogol watches that Supergirl has taken his power staff and attempts to retrieve it, but Supergirl is ready. At the same time, Superboy happily reunites with Krypto.
Superman cannot dwell on this happy moment, however, as he must defend himself from Zod. The two Kryptonians briefly enter superspeed, before Jor-El finally repairs his ship and tells Superman and his family to get inside so they can all escape together. Superman, Superboy, Supergirl and Krypto blast their enemies away with heat vision as the ship takes them to safety.
The Els embrace one another, happy to be safe for the time being. Supergirl is surprised at Superboy's new teenage phase. Superman asks Jor-El why the most powerful empires in the galaxy want him dead, but Jor-El ignores him and instead asks Supergirl about Rogol's staff. Supergirl confirms that Rogol really killed Krypton and the people of the Circle, the secret organization Rogol worked for, covered it up. One of the Circle's members, Empress Gandelo of the Trilium Collective, betrayed her own people to keep the truth about Krypton hidden.
Superman asks Jor-El if he was part of the Circle, but Jor-El says that everything he has done was to make the universe a better place. Superman asks why the galaxy want him dead and Jor-El angrily replies that the galaxy does not want unity and peace, it's people are not created to understand unity and peace. He sent Superman to Earth so he could understand those ideals, but Superman spent too much on Earth and he has a stilted perspective on how the universe works.
Supergirl intends to confront Gandelo once more and Superboy offers to join. Superman initially refuses but Jor-El says that Superboy's suit is equipped with a special teleportation device that only works for Kryptonians. Jor-El tells Superboy to go with Supergirl, because he needs to take Superman to someplace special. Superman reluctantly agrees to let the young Els go and take Krypto with them.
Left alone, Jor-El tells Superman that he was indeed a member of the Circle and asks him what Zod told him in superspeed. Surprised that Jor-El noticed that, Superman remembers that Zod told him he did not want to fight, but Superman had trouble trusting him. Zod says he did not want to work with Rogol, he only used him to escape from the Phantom Zone. If they cannot destroy Rogol on their own, then maybe they can do it together. Zod is also interested in learning the names of everyone responsible for Krypton's fate. Despite this, Superman does not trust Zod and they go separate ways.
Superman finds it hard to believe that General Zod is the one being honest with him. Superman asks his father if he is still Mr. Oz. Jor-El tells Superman that they have arrived to the one place that could answer his questions: Krypton.
