Shade is contacted by Dr. Fate who needs his assistance. Although Fate's magic is powerful, Shade's abilities are elemental in nature and are necessary to combat a cult known as the Wise Fools who are stealing small pieces of ectoplasmic energy using radio transmissions. Once they have sapped enough life from the listeners, they can create an immortal being of shadows just like Shade. Shade agrees to help Fate due to an outstanding grudge against the man who turned him immortal.
