The Rocket Red Brigade is Russia's armored police and metahuman defense force.
History
Prior to the adulteration of history, the Rocket Red Brigade was a force of armored Russian agents active during the Cold War. They encountered the American superhero Plastic Man[1] and had at least one member inducted into the Justice League International[2] and its European branch.[3] When US operative Peacemaker infiltrated Russian airspace, five Rocket Reds were deployed to prevent his escape. Although the lead, Rocket Red #3, was able to land on his Peacejet's hull and ordered him to land, Peacemaker dispatched him with a grenade and was able to cross the border into Finland, where the rest of group could not follow.[4]
Preceded in the altered universe by an individual, human Rocket Red,[5] the Rocket Red program was a top secret project of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In collaboration with M.A.R.S. Systems, they developed a series of heavily-armed robots, several times human size,[6] as the nation's first line of defense against metahuman threats. The Rocket Reds were discovered by the United States Government's Suicide Squad, deployed to Moscow to investigate the secret program. The Rocket Reds were sent out in response, recruiting the mercenary Squad member Deathstroke and pursuing the rest of the team through the streets of Moscow until they fled to a subway, where the Rocket Reds' bulk kept them from pursuing. When conventional forces failed to detain the Squad, the robots opened fire on the subway tunnel from above, collapsing it.[7] The Rocket Reds were then withdrawn by the Russian government, hoping to continue to keep their existence a secret from the rest of the world.[8] At least one Rocket Red was concealed in eastern Ukraine, where it too was discovered by the Suicide Squad, who destroyed it with a stolen tank.[9]
Following the resurfacing of some elements of the prior timeline, the Rocket Red Brigade was once again composed of numbered human operatives in power armor.[10] Katura Obasnajo, White Queen of the Checkmate intelligence agency, was removed from her post when her relationship with a Rocket Red was made public,[11] and Rocket Red #77, Noi Maxsimovich Komarov, crash-landed in Mongolia, nearly coming into conflict with locals until the situation was defused by Supergirl.[10] In Saint Petersburg, the Rocket Red Brigade and the American superheroes Hawk and Dove became embroiled in with a terrorist plot by Chechen separatists which resulted in fifteen deaths, with the Russian and American actors each blaming the other for the outcome.[12] In that same city, a group of Rocket Reds observed the Sigil of Doom in the sky before reporting to the Kremlin.[13]
