New Gods (Volume 3) #3 is an issue of the series New Gods (Volume 3) with a cover date of April, 1989.
Synopsis for "Tests and the Truth"
Orion attempts to bring peace between the Bug Empire and New Genesis, escorting the leaders of the Bugs to the presence of the Council of Five. Orion proposes giving them parts of the land to farm and govern, and in exchange, they add their numbers to New Genesis's forces against Apokolips. Commander Gideon strongly disagrees, saying the insects have no fighting skills, so Prime One suggest settling this dispute by a duel of champions. Gideon appoints Lonar as champion, and Prime One brings the new Forager.
The champions fight at the arena. Forager bests Lonar in speed and skill, but the Genesisian overpowers her in strength, brutally beating her almost to death. Lonar spares his opponent, admitting he would be proud to fight at her side against Apokolips, an act that enrages Gideon. Suddenly, Metron, awaken from his catatonic state, arrives at the scene, interrupting Gideon's rambling. Metron's purpose is to reveal the hidden truth about the Bug People, a secret hidden by the Council.
His narration goes back to the first outbreak of war between Apokolips and New Genesis. Attempting to retaliate against the giant biological mutants sent by their enemies, New Genesis decided to breed their strain of mutants, something Metron wanted to prevent. But the Council went forward with their project, planning to send the mutants to ravage Apokolips's resources. But their plan backfired, and this breed escaped the labs and infested New Genesis, a plague that turned into the Bug Empire. The Council decided to hide the truth, saying the bugs were a plague sent by Apokolips. The revelation shocks Orion, who considers Highfather to be an oppressor equal to Darkseid. Upset, Orion leaves, with Forager following him. After that, Highfather decides to ratify a peace treaty with the Bug Empire, who gratefully accept his decision.
