Dagger Dixon was a friend of Steven "Shifty" Drake, and always watched out for him and his son, Tim Drake, even after Steven was killed by Two-Face.[1] Dagger worked for a loan shark named Marty Roth by helping him collect debts. One time, when he was roughing up a man named Tony Moreno, Batman sent him to jail. Dagger then escaped but was caught again by Batman. As a reminder of humility, he got a tattoo of Batman.[2]

Six years later, after he was released from prison, Dagger continued to share his story. He was present at a bar when Batman and Robin captured a wanted murderer by the name of Tommy Silk. Dagger and Robin recognized each other from the past, and Dagger tried to use Tim to get some cash, as he was struggling financially as a result of keeping straight.

When Tim refused, Dagger went to the Penguin to request his help in blackmailing Bruce Wayne. However, this backfired when the Penguin tried to beat the secret out of him. Nonetheless, he fled to Wayne Manor, where the Penguin was eventually detained by Nightwing. Dagger soon got a Robin tattoo as a reminder of secrecy.[3]
