Synopsis for "The Apocalypse Road"

John Constantine has found himself in another universe, and it is so very different from his own. He is oppressed by the violence and death that has overtaken this earth. Something is causing that oppression, though, broadcasting fear, rage, and despair into every soul on the planet. John can barely withstand it as he plots his return home. His plan, though, requires finding his doppelganger from this place, and he has traced him to Liverpool.

As he drives past horror after horror, John tells himself that these people are not real - they are just shades of what might have been; what could be. After an hour of driving and seeing few people, he decides to take a break and stretch his legs. He soon discovers a faerie ring of mushrooms, signifying a portal to another place in the world. He recognizes the location on the other side as Glasgow, but daren't risk trying to coax it over to Liverpool - or even to enter it, lest he be torn apart, thanks to his doppelganger's existence.

Sighing, he returns to his car, and drives on. Around Rugby, he is surprised by a meteor shower that threatens to run him off the road, and he muses that the end of the world is nigh, and soon, the angels will be showing up. Unfortunately, one of the flaming rocks crashes into his car, and John loses consciousness.

He dreams of a voice that promises doom and destruction, but a sudden image of an ankh enters his mind, and another voice warns John to turn away from the prophecy of doom, and get to Liverpool, where they will meet. Waking with a head injury, John hot wires the car to force it to start, and reminds himself not to stop for anything. Unfortunately, that plan is stymied when he spots a car he'd passed earlier with a desperate family inside. The car has since crashed, and the parents have been murdered. The little girl in the back, though, is missing.

Trying to resist his own need to look, John gets out of the car and retrieves the girl's headphones. He casts a spell to find the girl. What he finds instead is a madman who has already cut the girl to pieces. Disgusted, John influences the killer to shoot himself dead.

Finally, John makes it to Liverpool, but by then, he's run out of cigarettes, and hopes that his doppelganger will have one to spare. Forcing himself onward, he follows his senses to where he knows his double is hiding, but he is horrified when he realizes that the house is his old house - the same house that was destroyed after his parents died, only still standing. Steadying himself, he makes himself knock on the door, and then steps back from the door to show he's not armed. He is surprised, though, when the door is answered by his father.
