Earth-89 is a reality of the Multiverse whose Gotham City is protected by Batman.
History
Pre-Crisis
Some time in the past, the vigilante hero known as Batman captured the supervillain Joker.
During the Crisis, Alexander Knox, a reporter of Gotham Gazette witnessed the skies turning red. After wondering if Batman would intervene, Knox and the rest of Earth-89 were erased from existence by the Anti-Monitor's Antimatter Wave.[1]
One month later, after The Spectre and the Paragons rebooted the Multiverse, Earth-89 was restored to the existence along with all the other universes.[2]
Post-Crisis
After the rebirth of the Multiverse, Bruce Wayne witnessed the deaths of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, and became once again the superhero Batman. During his career, Batman faced many villains, including his parents' murderer, Joker/Jack Napier,[3] and the crime lord, Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot.[4]

Trivia
- Earth-89 is the setting of Tim Burton's Batman movies, Batman and Batman Returns and their comics sequels, Batman '89 and Batman '89: Echoes, in the Post-Crisis Multiverse.[6]
- Despite the events of Batman and Batman Returns having happened in the continuity of Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin and Batman Forever, these two movies actually take place on Earth-97.[7][8]
- The events of Earth-89 also happened in an alternate timeline of Post-Crisis Earth-1. Its Batman, a doppleganger of Earth-89's Batman, retired some time after the events of Batman Returns.[9]
- The Earth designation of this reality references the movie Batman being released in 1989.
