Cafodd Ruth Barbara Grasemann ei geni yn 1930, yn South Woodford, Llundain yn fab i athro ac athrawes: Ebba Kruse oedd ei mam (a oedd o Ddenmarc) ac Arthur Grasemann oedd ei thad. Siaradai Swedeg a Daneg yn rhugl.^[2]
