Hi Stickpen, you nominated this image for speedy deletion because of a copyright violation. I agree with you and thank you for pointing this out. The speedy deletion was subsequently challenged and afterwards reverted by you. Please do not revert removals of speedy deletions, open a regular deletion request instead for it. I've done this now and ask you to add your comment here. Thanks and best wishes, AFBorchert (talk) 21:08, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi Stickpen - thanks for adding this pic, first one of the species on Commons. Any idea why it's come out so grey, almost a b/w photo? It looks like the saturation got set very low in either taking the photo or perhaps subsequent editing. I tried playing with it in photoshop to see if it might be possible to improve the colours, but it didn't work well enough to be worth uploading. Any chance you could get a better pic? (or even better yet, of one in the wild - there's some among the P. monophylla right beside SR 371 near the SR 74 junction in Riverside Co., if that's any help). - Thanks, MPF (talk) 10:33, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. That's actually pretty close to the actual color of the tree, just a tinge duller because it was overcast and low light. I didn't edit it at all besides cropping - just let the camera do its thing. If I ever snap another specimen I'll upload it. Thanx -Stickpen (talk) 20:09, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! Wonder if it is something to do with the growing conditions there? The ones I saw in the wild were greener than that (unfortunately I didn't have a digital camera then so no pics of my own). - MPF (talk) 22:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi, I appreciate your noticing my copyright violation, since I obviously missed it (I'm assuming this was uploaded to the Commons before I learned that the US-Government-owned PLANTS database contained several copyrighted images), so thank you for seeing it was removed promptly. I stand next to copyright laws and do my best to honor them, but I am capable of error.
However, I did not appreciate you taking this action without notifying the uploader (myself). It is common practice and an act of courtesy to let whomever uploaded the image know that their image has been nominated for deletion. I had a dead hotlink to the image sitting on my gallery page for three whole months before I ever realized it was missing. Please notify uploaders in the future when addressing a complaint about an image.
Thank you, Bob the Wikipedian (talk) 19:09, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah I don't know who appreciates what; I myself would rather someone just delete an image I mistakenly uploaded years and years ago without bothering me about it on my talk page. It may seem like an act of courtesy to some, and an annoyance to others. Really it wasn't about you, it was about the image. If I had an issue with a photo someone took himself I'd address it, but this was just one uploaded from the USDA site. I tried to speedy it, but the moderator wasn't familiar with the copyright laws and declined, so I had to go into a long-winded explanation in the deletion review - sorry if it was embarrassing. Didn't want to make it a further issue by griping at you on your talk page. It's really not a big deal. -Stickpen (talk) 21:45, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 02:35, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

The name of this plant is incorrect. The name Eugenia nitens is a synonym for Ixora nitens, which is not anything similar to your plant. It looks like it could an Eugenia or similar. Was the plant an Australian native? There is a Syzygium nitens from New Caledonia. I change it's category and description to unknown Eugenia. epibase (talk) 19:01, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
US Forest Service photos
[edit]I think theres a problem with your uploads to Category:PD US USDA FS. Example: File:Lewisialeana.jpg appears not to be a USDA photo as claimed. The image is from http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/communities/serpentines/center/endemics_gallery.shtml, images there are from CallPhotos as corectly noted below the gallery, this one is from http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi/img_query?query_src=photos_index&enlarge=0000+0000+0602+0175 (hope that link is stable), its mirrored and retouched but it is not a public domain photograph. Thats only a random example, the same applies to most of your uploads to Category:PD US USDA FS and maybe other users uploads too. How to proceede? --Martin H. (talk) 22:42, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah I had noticed that. I don't really know how to proceed, but feel free to list these for deletion if it is appropriate. Thanks! -Stickpen (talk) 08:20, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
I've changed the name on your image to: File:Oreocereus doelzianus subsp. sericatus.jpg as the original name has never been published, as far as I can check. The present name Oreocereus doelzianus subsp. sericatus was given in 2002 for a species known as Morawetzia sericata which fit the plant in your image. Uleli (talk) 16:15, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Rosa cultivars
[edit]I just found your user-page, as I saw that you created the remaining alphabetic 'Rosa cultivars' - categories...
I'm glad to see that my idea to split the 'Rosa cultivar categories' was taken up
but while reading through your page I had to follow the link to your pictures - and I hope it's ok if I correct some of the rosa-links...
--Anna reg (talk) 19:14, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, thanks. I thought the rose category had become unwieldy and there are more than enough cultivars in each letter to have a cat for each. Cheers, Stickpen (talk) 00:24, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Hey, sorry to have to tell you about this, but the sign was wrong. It was actually a known problem at RSABG; the original L. excubitus that was there had died and some of the wildflowers took over the area. This was near Fay's Wildflower Meadow, right? It's actually a picture of L. microcarpus, an annual wildflower. I'm going to sub in a picture of L. excubitus from my collection for the wiki page, but I thought you'd like to know. --Clickie (talk) 04:16, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Purple fritillary
[edit][1] This picture is upside-down. Fritillaries hang on their stalks like bells. If you look at the long spindly leaves that are growing from the stalk of the plant, you will see immediately that this is the case. Could you please upload it the right way up? 110.33.108.25 00:24, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello Stickpen
I have fixed some issues and added categories to your image. You shouldn't tag flickreview for images which aren't come from Flickr. Best regards--Hoangquan hientrang (talk) 06:38, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
- I know. The upload wizard automatically tags all those images for Flickr review. I haven't got around to removing the tags. -Stickpen (talk) 11:27, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

US Forest Service
[edit]I see you have been uploading several US Forest Service images and attaching the copyright template PD-USGov when there is a specific tag available PD-USGov-USFS. If it is not available during upload process you should edit the image details after upload and replace the copyright licence. I also notice that a Flickr warning notice is attached to some images. You can always remove that when the source clearly indicates it did not come from Flickr. I have seen this on some other people's upload but don't know why it happens. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 17:03, 18 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks I will try to get to that. -Stickpen (talk) 17:15, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Uploads from researchlearningcenter.com
[edit]Hi Stickpen; According to the website, researchlearningcenter.com, photographs should be attributed to "Anthony Valois and the National Park Service". Unfortunately, this notice is easy to overlook. But, if you upload more fine photographs from this site, it would be kind to attribute them as Mr. Valois requests.[2][3] Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 22:12, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
Forest Service use of photos
[edit]I am working with the Forest Service at the Spring Mountains NRA on their new interpretive centre in Kyle Canyon that aims to help visitors better understand the interconnected ecosystems of the Spring Mountains, and the role they play as stewards of this special place.
We came across wonderful your photo rosa woodsii var. ultramontane on Creative Commons and would like to incorporate it into the interpretive exhibits. I would just like to confirm your CC license that this is free for the Forest Service to use in their exhibits and that it should be attributed to "Stickpen".
We are very grateful for your contribution to this project and hope that your image will help to inspire visitors to take a closer look at the nature around them. Please contact me at kdaley@aldrichpears.com Thank you

Melaleuca wilsonii
[edit]Hello Stickpen,
Australian here! Thank you very much for your beautiful images of Melaleuca wilsonii. I am writing Wikipedia pages about Melaleuca species (mostly Australian plants) and your two images help to make the Melaleuca wilsonii page one of the best I've done. It is difficult to explain "decussate" in words or to describe the stamen bundles or deciduous petals without images. I hope you like the way I've used your photos.
All the best to you from Down Under.
