functions vs. curves

[edit]

we should check out relation to Category:Curves --W!B: 04:38, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Curves a subcat of Special functions? I suggest we make Curves the top category and Functions (which contains Special functions et al) a subcat of Curves...? Both Functions and Curves may be categorized under Mathematics, Diagrams, etc. Glimz 08:38, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree and I shall do it. HB 19:21, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
difference between 'curve' und 'function' isn't trival, as - mainly - a curve (even a polydimensional) is a linear graph to a function, thus, maybe them two should be the same - we won't have a lot of plots of curves without a function describing it, but some functions will have planes, not curves (exepting we understand planes as curves of higher degree ..) - for most cases, "curve" and "function" will be used as synonyms - otherwise, we will have to set them both to same hierachical position and put nearly all the contents into both categories. --W!B: 04:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC) PS besides, we do not need an exact mathematical definition, but we have to sort images, so - primarily - it should be practicable, without been incorrect..[reply]
Sorry for my english but I'm french Yes, you are right. Function and curves are two different items. Some pictures may be categorized in category functions and in category curves, other in category function and category planes. It was a mistake when I added the category:curves in this one. However, I think that function has to be directly a subcategory of category:mathematics. (see mathematica diagrams).HB 11:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Special functions?

[edit]

As opposed to ordinary ones? Shouldn't those just be in this category? — Omegatron 02:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand too. HB 19:21, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

is diagrams made with - the program - Mathematica, in fact, in Category:Diagrams there only should be single images, but no categories like curves or functions, as most of the function-images (but not all) are to be put into Category:XY plots. maybe Category:Mathematical diagrams would make sense --W!B: 04:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for my english but I'm french I also think that function isn't a subcategory of mathematica diagrams. But category:functions doesn't seem to be a subcategrory of category XY plots (non natural category) neither a subcategory of category mathematical diagrams. I think that category:functions is a natural category and have to be categorized directly under category:mathematics. But it's too difficult to a bad english speaker to understand english subtility. ;-) HB 11:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do not excuse: it's too difficult to a bad english speaker to understand an bad english writer, I'm austrian.. I'll agree. we had a long discussion in de-WP about that topic, concluding in curve beeing the image of an de:Weg: a continuous map of a real interval into a topological space, thus a "(phenomenologic) representation of the intuitive term line" (what You call "natural"), not a theorical term of any mathematical discipline --W!B: 22:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
