Piccolo Imperatore.
  • English: Giuseppe Cristofolo, nicknamed "Peppino il Bello" ("Peppino the handsome") to tell him apart from another Peppino, dubbed "il Brutto" ("the Ugly"). For some years this model seems to have been among Gloeden's favourite ones (appearing in at least 45 different shots), posing (mostly nude) from late childhood into adulthood. Local historian Alfio Barca found he was born in Castelmola on May 17 1882, and died in Taormina on the 1st of April, 1954.
His delicate facial features had him appear in several portraits, including the one called "Piccolo imperatore" ("Young emperor").
On the paper envelope protecting the glass negative # 1013 now at the Fondazione Alinari, Florence, his name is marked as "Peppino Cristofalo Bello".
Furthermore, a postcard of # 1048, in which he appears together with Pasquale Casillo, is titled: "Pasqualino e Pinello", meanig: "Little Pasquale and little Peppino" (<Pep>/pinello), so "Pinello" might have been his "official" nickname.
He married in 1903; Gloeden shot a few delicate large format portraits of his daughter Giuseppa Cristofalo as a child, holding flowers.
