3D Shiny?

Physiology Edit

Special Abilities
Under the description, it says, "Like other Dragon Pokemon..." Is this imply it is dragon-like or Dragon-type? If it is the latter, should it be changed? Sparky 14:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Tyranitar isn't a Dragon-type. Note that it actually says "Like some Dragon Pokémon"; i.e. that Tyranitar is being compared to Dragons. —darklordtrom 20:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I think someone mentioned this on Metagross's talk page but doesn't Tyranitar, along with Dragonite, have a rare chance of appearing in the wild in B/W by shaking grass spots? Serebii says Route 15 but can anyone else confirm this? Shiramu Kuromu 00:00, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Black and White Locations
I have Pokemon White version and I caught a Tyranitar at lvl 50 in Route 15, where all those hiker people are and you have to use strength on the boulders. It's hard to find though, it's rare. There are also wild Pupitars too, they're slightly rare.

Highest Base stat Total

Origin specificity?
Shouldn't it be mentioned more specifically that Tyranitar is also based off a Tyrannosaurus like Godzilla was? Or is that a bit much? Ability Gen VI
In my version of Y I have a tyranitar which seems to have the wrong ability as it has Unnerve as its main ability despite this page saying its hidden ability should be unnerve and its main sand stream (which mine doesn't have) Is this a change in Gen VI and if so does the page need editing? - A Hidden Ability is just an ability that you need to get in a special way (for example Dream World/Hidden Grottos in Generation V and Friend Safari and Horde Encounters in Gen VI). They are not actually hidden on each particular Pokémon. --It's Funktastic~!話してください 19:25, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

- You don't seem to know how the Ability system works. A Pokémon with its Hidden Ability can never use its normal Ability/ies and vice versa.--電禅Den Zen 19:31, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
I apologise profusely! I haven't had any of the Gen V games so I skipped over the hidden abilities when they were first introduced. I thought the hidden ability was extra if obtained and the pokémon would have two. Sorry for any confusion guys :/ Cjmorgs (talk) 19:33, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Sp.Def Calculation
I thought I had figured out a awesome use for Assault Vest with Tyranitar, but it seems the guys over at smogon beat me to it.
Anyways, I know a Tyanitar with fully invested Sp.Def and a Sp.Def increasing nature gives it a Sp.Def of 328. The vest gives Tyranitar 50% more Sp.Def which would be 492. Even without the vest, its ability to summon a sandstorm, and then sandstorm's effect of increasing the Sp.Def of Rock type Pokémon by 50% by itself. With a combination of both, right out of the starting gate Tyranitar gets 100% more Sp.Def
The thing is, everywhere I look I see 738 as the magical number, but shouldn't it be 656? 328 + 100% (or 328 x 1.5) should = 656 the only way you can get 738 is if you take 328 x 1.5 which = 492, and then you timed 492 by 1.5 which would = 738.

- Well, I'm a math major and it's 738 (328 × 1.5 × 1.5). It's very simple; AV multiplies it by 1.5 and then sandstorm multiplies it by 1.5. All stat boost combinations, such as Huge Power + Choice Band and Unburden + Agility, are calculated this way.--電禅Den Zen 08:57, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Seven Starting Moves
As far as I know, Pokemon can only learn 4 moves at a time. I don't own any of the games, so I cannot determine what ttar actually starts with. Anyone mind changing this? Smurfton (talk) 21:18, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
- If a Pokémon has more than 4 starting moves, then you'll have to use a heart scale(or tiny mushroom in LG/FR) to learn that move. What it really means is that while the Pokémon CAN learn the move, it won't have the move without outside intervention on the trainers part. Does that help clear things up for you? Name origin
I know that Larvitar comes from larva, Pupitar comes from Pupa and Tyranitar comes from Tyrannosaurus, but what does the "tar" mean? Christian (talk) 23:35, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Event Moves
I feel that not only this page, but other pages should be edited to have learnsets on moves only learned through events. Tyranitar learns Seismic Toss from a past event, but I don't know how to create learnsets when editing. Bulldogs1234869 9:45, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Godzilla Mentions/Origin? Is Tyranitar an exception? Or is this like Volcarona, Hydreigon, and the "Nidos"?
Okay, I need to understand what's supposed to be going on here. Seeing that this kind of stuff was supposed to be removed, much like the Mothra references for Volcarona and the Ghidorah references for Hydreigon, should we even be keeping the Godzilla/Anguirus mentions in Tyranitar's origins and name origins? Look, I can understand where some people get the idea that Tyranitar is a Godzilla reference or that it is somehow based off of Godzilla in their minds (though, honestly, I think it is more of a general reference to the Kaiju genre as a whole rather than just Godzilla specifically; but I digress, as that isn't even the point here), but has there been any actual confirmation from Game Freak or any creditable source? I'm asking this for the sake of consistency, seeing that it has even been stated on this very talk page that this kind of stuff has to be removed. FireRed Pokédex Entry
The unique entry Tyranitar gets in FireRed is really interesting to me, since I have conflicting evidence of its existence. I've found a, sadly very blurry, video on youtube [Link: https://youtu.be/XPOAp8MPk10?t=335] that definitely seems to show Tyranitar's entry as being the one shown in the page, but when I fired up an emulator with a ROM of FireRed and cheated it so all Dex Entries were available the text was verbatim just the Gold Entry (which is interesting as all other Johto pokémon in FireRed have their Silver Entry) [I recorded this and posted it to youtube here: https://youtu.be/42uEl6ldGOs?t=391]. ALSO, Serebii.net states that Tyranitar's dex entry is the same between FireRed and LeafGreen, that being the Gold Entry like from the ROM I had used [Link: https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/248.shtml]. So, considering the potentially faulty evidence I have, I would really like to conclusively know, if, for whatever reason, Tyranitar changed Dex Entries between different versions of the game or if there's some other kind of explanation at hand. - From what I can find the entry is the same as the Gold one as well, it was changed a fair few years ago with no explanation and by a user who made very few edits. I did find this much cleaner version so it looks like there may have potentially been different English versions at different points. --Spriteit (talk) 13:13, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Okay done some more digging you have a copy of Ver 1.0 of the game, you can tell this by checking Pupitar's entry, where it is listed as the Hard Pokémon, this was a glitch in that version that prevented Pokédex categories with two words displaying properly, this was fixed in V1.1 (or Rev A) to display correctly, and they apparently fixed Tyranitar's entry as well. --Spriteit (talk) 14:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Godzilla
While I understand that the "origins" section of this site sometimes gets out of hand with far-reaching speculation, there are some Pokemon whose pop culture inspirations are so blatant, the design itself qualifies AS the "explicit statement." Tyranitar is a Godzilla reference head to toe. Nidoking is a Baragon reference as well.
It's different to suggest that Volcarona is a Mothra reference, because all they have in common is being giant monster moths - and there are a lot of those. Godzilla, however, has a very distinctive profile that Tyranitar follows along with multiple other specific homages in their design, naming convention and dex entries. Likewise for Nidoking/Baragon, or how Salamence's wings are literally those of Devilman.- unsigned comment from Scythemantis (talk • contribs)
