Prior to the events of Detective Pikachu, Mewtwo was following the R case, as it disliked its cells being abused by humans. It chanced upon Harry Goodman and his partner Pikachu after Keith Norman caused them to have a car accident, and Pikachu begged Mewtwo to save Harry's life. Observing the strong bond between Pikachu and Harry, Mewtwo agreed to save Harry on the condition that Pikachu retrieved its cells from the humans that were abusing them. Mewtwo placed Harry's consciousness into Pikachu's body, which—due to their strong bond—allowed both consciousnesses to coexist within the same body, forming Detective Pikachu. However, to preserve the balance between their consciousnesses, Pikachu and Harry both lost their memories, and Pikachu became unable to use moves. Mewtwo then placed Harry's body into a coma-like state that allowed his body to survive without need for food or water, appearing simply to be asleep, and brought the body back with it to its cave.

Detective Pikachu

Mewtwo appears on a few occasions throughout the game, watching Detective Pikachu's progress from afar. It is pleased to see Pikachu on the path to fulfill his promise. After Tim and Pikachu capture Keith Norman, Pikachu returns the cells he recovered from Keith to Mewtwo. However, Mewtwo senses that some of its cells are still out there, and it asks Pikachu to retrieve those cells as well. This leads Tim and Pikachu to discover that Keith had been receiving orders from someone else, and that other person is planning to disperse R during Ryme City's Pokémon Carnival.

After Tim and Pikachu successfully find and shut down all the R dispersing machines in the town's central square, Pikachu finally fulfills his promise of returning all the cells to Mewtwo. Pikachu then asks Mewtwo to uphold its end of the bargain now. The rest of the conversation is unseen, but Mewtwo does something to Pikachu that leaves him unconscious just before Tim arrives. Mewtwo tells Tim that Harry is still alive and Tim will find him one day if he doesn't give up, then flies away.

Detective Pikachu Returns

Mewtwo fights Merloch in Deoxys's body.

After Tim, Rachel, and Detective Pikachu return from the Southern Ruins, they see Mewtwo with Harry's body in tow being chased by a swarm of Beedrill. Unitas attempts to capture Mewtwo using Control Cubes, but Mewtwo blasts the cubes away with its psychic powers. However, they are able to obtain Harry's body.

As Detective Pikachu regains his memories throughout the story, Pikachu reveals that, when it asked Mewtwo to uphold its end of the bargain at the end of the previous game, Mewtwo warned him that separating Harry's consciousnesses from Pikachu's was a far riskier process than joining them, and estimated a 50% chance of survival. Pikachu was ready to take that risk, but Harry was hesitant to risk Pikachu's life. He asked Mewtwo to wait and see if Tim could figure out a safer way of separating them. Mewtwo warned him that, because Pikachu had used a move earlier to protect Tim, the balance between Harry's consciousness and Pikachu's consciousness had been disrupted, so one of the consciousnesses was in danger of fading completely. Mewtwo could restore the balance between their consciousnesses, but this would cause Harry to forget the things he recently remembered. Harry consents, and Mewtwo wiped his memories just before Tim arrived.

At the Pokémon Unity Lab, after Merloch merges his consciousness with Deoxys, Mewtwo senses something is awry and comes to fight off Merloch. Eventually, Pikachu takes the energy capsules containing energy extracted from his and Harry's bodies and smashes into Deoxys, causing Merloch's consciousness to return to his body and ending the fight. The energy from the fight causes the section of the Pokémon Unity Lab to be destroyed.

Mewtwo was created by humans in the Kanto region 20 years in the past, but he managed to escape. Months before the events of the film, Harry Goodman was recruited by Howard Clifford to track down Mewtwo, which eventually led to his capture. Trapped in a spherical chamber, Mewtwo was used by Dr. Ann Laurent to produce the R substance, an aerosolized drug that can make Pokémon go on a rampage due to a unique element of Mewtwo's DNA. However, Mewtwo was freed by Harry and his partner Pikachu, making Mewtwo realize that not all humans are evil. When Harry's car crashed in an ambush, Mewtwo came to his rescue and combined a dying Harry into Pikachu's body but also erased his memory, creating Detective Pikachu as a result.

When Detective Pikachu was critically injured, a group of Bulbasaur brought Harry's son Tim, as well as Detective Pikachu, to Mewtwo's location, where he healed Pikachu. But before Mewtwo was able to fully reveal the secret of Harry's case, he was captured and taken away by Howard's men, apparently led by Howard's son Roger. When Tim arrived at Howard's office, he learned that Howard was trying to transfer his mind into Mewtwo, so that he could use Mewtwo's ability to transfer all humans' minds into their Pokémon. Mewtwo tried to warn Tim to run before his body was taken over.

After a long struggle, Tim was able to remove Howard's neural link and Mewtwo was freed. As Detective Pikachu was about to fall to his death, Mewtwo used his psychic powers to save him. He then reversed the disaster caused by Howard. Before taking his leave, Mewtwo revealed that Detective Pikachu was actually Tim's father Harry Goodman and unmerged Harry out of Pikachu's body.

Personality and characteristics

This Mewtwo is portrayed as a benevolent figure despite his mistrust of humans, much like both Mewtwo that appeared in the movies after their character development. While mostly viewed by Tim and Pikachu as a dangerous, malevolent figure prior to meeting him, Mewtwo is, in fact, a protector of both humans and Pokémon, able to use his abilities to save the lives of others as he watches over them.

This Mewtwo differs from previous depictions of the character in two ways. The first is that he possesses the unique ability to transfer the minds of humans into Pokémon. This ability could only be done when the receiving Pokémon are willing (as in the case of Detective Pikachu) or when they lose control of themselves (when drugged with the R substance). The second is that he speaks with an androgynous "fused" telepathic voice provided by a male and a female voice actor; despite this, unlike previous Mewtwo, which were almost always referred to with gender-neutral pronouns, he is referred to with male pronouns throughout the movie. However, when Howard's mind is transferred into Mewtwo, he speaks non-telepathically with Howard's voice.

Trivia

  • This incarnation of Mewtwo is the first one to speak normally (similar to Team Rocket's Meowth) rather than telepathically, albeit only when fused with Howard.
  • Mewtwo is the only Legendary Pokémon to appear in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
