An Evolution item (Japanese: 進化アイテム Evolution item) is an item that allows certain Pokémon to evolve. Depending on the Pokémon and the item, the Pokémon may need to hold the item, or the item may be able to be used directly.

Regardless of method, if a Pokémon evolves using one of these items, it consumes the item.

List of Evolution items

These Evolution items cause a Pokémon to evolve when used on it from the Bag. They cannot be used in battle. Evolution stones are the most common example.

Others

The Sun Shard and Moon Shard in Pokémon XD cause an Eevee with high friendship to evolve when it levels up while one of these items is in the Bag. They are the only Evolution items to be Key Items.

Acquisition

Evolution items are normally found in a variety of locations. However, there are some methods that can yield a large number of them.

Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Evolution items can be spent along with Candy to evolve certain Pokémon. There are seven Evolution items: the Sun Stone, King's Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, Upgrade, Sinnoh Stone, and Unova Stone.

Pokémon that evolve into Generation II Pokémon or with a Sun Stone require the same item as in the core series games. Non-Generation IV Pokémon that evolve into Generation IV Pokémon require the Sinnoh Stone to evolve, unless they have a location-based evolution in the core series games. Generation V Pokémon that require an item to evolve (other than the Sun Stone) require a Unova Stone to evolve.

In addition to Evolution items, there are also special Lure Modules that allow Pokémon to evolve that in the core series games can only evolve in certain locations. The special Lure Modules are the Magnetic, Mossy, Rainy and Glacial Lure Modules.

Pokémon the Series

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

A King's Rock first appeared in Ring Masters, where Ash received it as a prize for winning the Sumo Conference. In Outrageous Fortunes, Misty's Poliwhirl used it to evolve itself into a Politoed by holding it while being transferred between Pokémon Centers.

Another King's Rock appeared in A Crowning Achievement, where it was found on a rock after the water level in the local river dropped dramatically; Alice's Slowpoke used it to evolve into a Slowking as a Shellder bit onto it while it was on Slowpoke's head.

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

A Deep Sea Scale and Deep Sea Tooth appeared in The Evolutionary War. Nancy and Keith found one of each item and gave them to each other, allowing both of their Clamperl to evolve when they were transferred from a Pokémon Center to another while holding the items.

A King's Rock, two Deep Sea Teeth, and two Deep Sea Scales appeared in Showdown At Linoone as some of the items Tokin had picked up.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

In One Big Happiny Family!, Brock carved and made an Oval Stone for his newly hatched Happiny, which later helped her evolve into a Chansey in The Brockster is In.

In Fighting Fear with Fear!, Ash received a Razor Fang from Gary. Later in the episode, he used it to evolve his Gligar into a Gliscor.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In The Cuteness Quotient!, a Prism Scale formed on the body of Jinny's Feebas, which allowed it to evolve into a Milotic.

In Searching for Chivalry!, Wikstrom gave Goh a Metal Coat, allowing him to evolve his Scyther into Scizor when it was transferred through a trade machine while holding it.

A Strawberry Sweet first appeared in The Sweet Taste of Battle!, decorating a cupcake that Goh was eating. When his newly caught Milcery showed interest in it, he placed it on her head and then spun around with her to celebrate making a new friend, inadvertently triggering her Evolution into Alcremie in the process.

A Dragon Scale appeared in Looking Out for Number Two!, where Ash and Goh found it from a sunken ancient submersible. Goh subsequently gave it as a gift to a wild Seadra.

History

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

In Quilava Quandary, Gold was given a King's Rock by the Day-Care Couple after training with them, which he gave to his Poliwag to hold. In Ampharos Amore, Gold's newly evolved Poliwhirl and Silver's Seadra evolved into a Politoed and a Kingdra, respectively, while holding their respective evolutionary items, King's Rock and Dragon Scale.

Diamond & Pearl arc

In Problematic Probopass and Mad Magnezone III, Fantina's Duskull used its Reaper Cloth to save Diamond and Pearl from a fall.

In Yikes, Yanmega! II, Diamond's Lickilicky, Kit, used a Protector to protect itself from Mars's Yanmega swarm's soundwaves. Roseanne later revealed that the Protector was one of the items she used in her research of Pokémon Evolution, the other seen items being a Reaper Cloth, Dragon Scale, Magmarizer, and King's Rock.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

In Dealing With A Koffing Fit, Silver's Sneasel evolved into a Weavile due to having gained experience while holding a Razor Claw, which had been given to Silver by Green.

In Raising the Stakes with Rhyperior, it was revealed that Silver had given Blue a Protector to be held by his Rhydon, allowing it to evolve into a Rhyperior when it was traded between the two Trainers. Afterwards, Blue had let Silver keep Rhyperior as a replacement for his lost Ursaring.

Scarlet & Violet arc

A set of Auspicious Armor appeared in a flashback in PASV09, where it was given to Scarlet by Mela, along with a Charcadet. She later used it to evolve Charcadet into Armarouge.

Some evolution items appear in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The Moon Stone and Dusk Stone are featured as Trainer cards.

The Moon Stone, the Dusk Stone, and the Reaper Cloth appear on certain Pokémon cards as held items. These held items work in the same fashion as Poké-Bodies, in that the effect the item provides is active whenever the Pokémon is in play. All of them allow their Pokémon to evolve on the same turn they enter play, which is normally not allowed.

In the HeartGold and SoulSilver Series, the art for Pokémon that have evolved in the core series by either using an item, leveling up while holding an item, or being traded while holding an item included their respective evolution item.[1]

The following is a list of cards named after or including an evolution item.

Trivia

  • Before Generation VIII, there are no directly used Evolution items other than the Evolution stones.
  • Generations VII and IX are the only generations to not introduce a held Evolution item (excluding Generation I, in which held items do not exist).
  • All held Evolution items that cause a Pokémon to evolve upon leveling up require the Pokémon to level up during a specific time of day.
  • Along with being listed among the Evolution stones, the Oval Stone has the "Use" option when selected in the Bag, but if the player tries to use it, it won't say "Able" under any Pokémon.
    • This makes it the only Evolution item with "Stone" in its English name which is not an Evolution stone.
    • This is not the case in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, in which all Evolution items have been turned into directly used items.
  • While not explicitly an Evolution item, a TM226 is required to evolve Dipplin into Hydrapple, as Dipplin cannot learn Dragon Cheer via any other means.
