Centimani su u rimskoj mitologiji storuki i pedesetoglavi divovi, pandani grčkih Hekatonhira.[1]
Opis i mitovi
[uredi | uredi izvor]Centiman znači "storuk" (lat. centum = "sto" + manus = "ruka"). Njihova su imena: Kot (lat. Cottus), Gig (lat. Gyes) i Brijarej (lat. Briareus). Rođeni su kao djeca Tere, Majke Zemlje i Cela, Oca Neba. Tera je prvo rodila lijepe Titane i Titanide, ali je Cel pobjesnio kad je vidio ružne Centimane sa sto ruku i pedeset glava, pa ih je, svu trojicu, smjestio natrag u Terinu utrobu - podzemlje, što je njoj uzrokovalo veliku bol, jer je voljela svu svoju djecu, bez obzira na izgled. Zato je naredila najmlađem Titanu Saturnu da svrgne svog oca i oslobodi braću; on je postao kralj svemira, ali nije pustio Centimane. Saturnov sin Jupiter je oslobodio Centimane kako bi mu pomogli u borbi protiv Titana, ali su se oni, prema Vergiliju, borili na strani Titana. Higin piše da su Centimani sinovi Tere, ali ne i Cela, već Etera (Tama, Zrak).
Kultura
[uredi | uredi izvor]U Danteovoj Božanstvenoj komediji spominje se jedan Centiman - Brijarej, kako napada samog boga Jupitera na planini Olimp.
