Recap

Steve and Blue have been putting on plays based on stories from books. We also take a look at all sorts of different stories. When Blue knocks some books out of the bookshelf, we take the time to put them back on the shelf and also help some lost characters get back to the proper storybooks that they belong in. Later, we skidoo to the Forest, where we help out Bunny to make a play with us and Steve is the star. Blue wants to play Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Steve is Papa Bear, Bunny is Mama Bear, Tickety is Baby Bear and Blue is Goldilocks.

Trivia

  • Two of Steve's friends are executive producer Todd Kessler and art & animation manager Soo Kyung Kim.
  • This is the first episode where all three clues are drawn in the living room.
  • This is the only episode where the viewers give part of the answer, and Steve was able to finish it.
  • When Steve Skidoos into Blue's book, the rabbit tells him that he's the king in the story and Steve takes this to mean Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll.
    • During the segment, he references his songs "All Shook Up" and "Hound Dog," as well as his traditional "Elvis has left the building" line.
  • When Blue puts her paw up on the screen, the pawprint is a bit bigger than usual. The pawprint makes Tickety's bounce sound for the last bounce as it bounces away.
  • It is revealed in this episode that Steve's favorite food is bananas.
  • This is the third episode to use the unusual “No, a clue!” phrase from The Grow Show.
  • During The So Long Song, Steve sings like Elvis Presley, even popping up his collar for it. This is the only time that this happens.
    • He does, however, go back to his normal voice when he says goodbye to the viewers.
  • This episode is the second of two on the Story Time VHS, the other being "Blue's Story Time".
    • A promotional commercial for this and Arts and Crafts described this episode as "a never-before-seen-on-television storybook adventure" when talking about the Story Time VHS. You can watch this promo commercial on both tapes.
  • This is the only Season 1 episode to air in 1998, even though it was taped in 1996. It took about two years until it finally aired.
    • This is also the only episode produced in Season 1 not to air before Season 2 began airing a year earlier, as this was aired during when season 2 was still airing and also was made as an aired episode for that season.
  • Susan Motamed, the director and producer for the video letter segments and voiceovers of the first season, was also the voice of Cinderella, but she was uncredited in the actual episode. However, she was credited in the Story Time VHS.
  • In the Mailtime segment, Mailbox pretends to be the giant from "Jack and the Beanstalk".
  • This is the first episode since The Trying Game to have new footage for the Mailtime segment.
  • When Blue jumps out of the bookcase and knocks some books and their characters out of them, the wolf gets buried under several books until he goes over to Steve.
  • When the wolf puts his grandma clothes on, the sound of Mailbox's entrance was used.
  • The storybooks to choose which character goes where are:
  • This is the first episode where Steve doesn't say, "Now what do we do?" after finding the first clue.
  • This is also the first episode to use the "Notebook!" phrase that is similar to Mailbox's Birthday, but it is different and it's used twice in a row instead of just once. This happens again in some episodes from What Was Blue's Dream About? until Occupations.
  • This is the first episode where Blue cries, though she's only pretending to.
  • This is the second episode to use the "It's a Clue!" line from Blue Goes to the Beach.
  • This episode features a Noggin instrument logo.
  • This was the last episode in airing order to feature Blue in the credits.
  • This marks the first time where "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" was reenacted, where Blue was Goldilocks, Steve was Papa Bear, Rabbit was Mama Bear, and Tickety was Baby Bear.
    • "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" will be reenacted again in Sing & Boogie in Blue's Room, with Blue as Goldilocks, Roary as Papa Bear, Frederica as Mama Bear, and Polka Dots as Baby Bear.
  • This is the first time Jack and the Beanstalk happens. This will happen again later in Blue's Big Treasure Hunt when the Giant's not around, Puppets which will be the answer to Blue's Clues in that episode when the Giant's a clue in the skidoo segment, and The Fairy Tale Ball when Joe sees Jack and the Giant, but whenever the Fairy Tale Ball Giant says something, the only thing that everyone shouts is "Hooray!".

Goofs

  • For an unknown reason in the United States, it was not released on TV until November 9, 1998. It was also released on VHS on June 9, 1998, which was five months ahead of its release. The promo for the series' first two VHS releases erroneously says it would air on October 9, 1998, which was a month before its true airdate, but other airdate concepts for this episode in the United States are December 22, 1996, and February 28, 1999, after Season 2. It was also released in other regions such as the United Kingdom and Australia before the United States release. It was released in Australia on February 24, 1997, and in the United Kingdom on January 12, 1998.
    • As a result, this is the only season 1 episode that was released after Halloweentown.
  • When Sidetable says, "Blue's Clues, I'm so excited", her mouth looks like she is saying, "I just love Blue's Clues".
  • When Steve takes the crown off briefly and asks if the viewer will be the king with him, his hair from early Season 1 is used.
  • When Steve is playing the Three Little Pigs with Blue, there is a white border around the screen, and Steve and the house are sticking outside the background.
    • This also happens in the pilot episode, Snack Time, before Steve Skidoos into the farm.
  • When the wolf talks to Steve, there are some frames where his mouth changes from a dark gray to a lighter gray.
