Stately Wayne Manor was the ancestral home of Bruce Wayne who lived there with his youthful ward Dick Grayson, Dick's doting Aunt Harriet, and their faithful butler Alfred.
Exterior[]
Wayne Manor was a sprawling brick mansion with a long circular driveway, multiple roof peaks, and a castle-style turret. The main entrance was flanked on both sides by large hedges and gardens which were often seen tended by Alfred and/or Aunt Harriet.
As noted on a road sign outside the secret Batcave exit for the Batmobile, Wayne Manor was located 14 miles outside Gotham City.

Not counting the secret Batcave below, Wayne Manor had 14 bathrooms, 18 bedrooms, and 3 entrances. (The Cat's Meow)

Batcave access[]
The primary passage to the Batcave was located in Bruce Wayne's study behind a bookshelf which retracted into the wall upon the activation of a switch hidden under the hinged head of a bust of William Shakespeare found on a nearby table. Behind the bookshelf were the Batpoles, two fireman's poles down which Bruce and Dick would slide into the Batcave.
An unseen mechanism activated by an Instant Costume Change switch mid-shaft changed Bruce and Dick's civilian clothes to their Batman and Robin costumes on the way down.
The bottoms of the Batpoles featured a Compressed Steam Batpole Lift which propelled the bottom platforms back up the poles enabling Batman and Robin to slide back up to the study, their costumes being changed back into civilian clothes on the way.
The secondary passage between Wayne Manor and the Batcave was a secret Batcave elevator generally used by Alfred.

Behind the Scenes[]
All Wayne Manor interiors were shot on soundstages.
Exterior shots of Wayne Manor were filmed at 380 South San Rafael Avenue in the South Arroyo neighborhood of Pasadena, California. The mansion is a private home which still stands much as it did at the time of filming.[1] While stately Wayne Manor is arguably the mansion's most famous role, it has been used as a location in a long list of other films.[2]
The Dozierverse continuation comic Batman '66 used an exterior Wayne Manor design clearly inspired by the Pasadena mansion, but not an exact duplicate. The animated Dozierverse continuation films Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face used a new Wayne Manor exterior design which did not resemble the Pasadena mansion at all.
Trivia[]
- The manor was generally referred to in William Dozier's iconic narration as "Stately Wayne Manor," a phrase which has entered pop culture.
- Writer, musician, and performer Ernie Santilli works under the pseudonym "Stately Wayne Manor."
