The DC Animated Universe (sometimes referred to as the Timmverse) is the name for the reality that serves as the main setting for Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond, along with other projects and spin-offs such as Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. It also serves as the main setting of Superman: The Animated Series, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Multiple comic series are also set in the DCAU, including The Batman Adventures, Batman Gotham Adventures,Batman Beyond (Vol. 1) and Batman: The Adventures Continue.

This reality's Batman reflected both the incarnations from Earth-One and New Earth. Initially fighting crime and corruption on his own, he began to fight costumed criminals around his mid-30s. Batman often received help from other heroes and vigilantes, including Superman and the Justice League. In Gotham, he fought crime with the assistance of Dick Grayson under the identities of Robin and Nightwing, though would later receive help from Barbara Gordon and Tim Drake in his later years. However, after a tragic final confrontation with the Joker, Batman became more reclusive, eventually retiring after a traumatic night in his 50s. Years later, the Batman identity would be taken up by Terry McGinnis, who would continue in a futuristic Gotham with the assistance of an elderly Bruce Wayne.

Amongst the best known contributors to the DC Animated Universe are Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, Darwyn Cooke and Dwayne McDuffie.
