Abigail "Abby" Newton is a character that only appeared in Barney's Great Adventure. Portrayed by Diana Rice in the film, Abby is a staunch Barney advocate and a perpetual, if lovable, annoyance to her older brother Cody.[2] Abby is also the older sister of Fig Newton and the granddaughter to Eliza and George Greenfield. She's best friends with Marcella.
Background[]
Development[]
In the original concepts by Stephen White, who wrote the screenplay for what would be Barney's Great Adventure, Abby remained the same in terms of personality, despite the plot changing from conception to finalization. There were certain plot points and mentions that didn't make it into the film, which includes:
- While Abby only had three violin lessons, playing the violin would've been her dream in the film, which eventually came true.
- Abby had a box of crayons, in which she would draw a crayoned picture of Barney, BJ and Baby Bop. Her box of crayons would later help the gang to become pretend waiters at Chez Snobbe.[1]
- Abby, along with Marcella, told the Greenfields about Barney, BJ and Baby Bop early on in the film.
Role in film[]
Barney's Great Adventure[]
In the film, Abby, alongside Cody and Marcella are dropped off at the Greenfield Farm for a week. With her is a Barney plush. When she and the others get to the farm, she tries to convince Cody to have fun with Barney and play pretend with them and Marcella. She and Marcella use their imaginations to eventually bring Barney to life, to Cody's surprise. Throughout the film, she's delighted with the larger than life appearance of Barney, often playing with him (alongside Marcella) on the farm. Eventually, she and the others discover a magical egg in the barn. She asks if Barney has seen an egg like it before, but while he hasn't she and the others go to tell the Greenfields about their discovery. Abby makes it known that her grandparents have to see the egg as it's not normal. Her grandparents convince them to take it to Miss Goldfinch, who Abby met in the previous year and was delighted with her encounter. As they look around for answers about the egg once the group arrives to Goldfinch's they're unable to find answers until Abby notices a book they didn't look in before which eventually contains all the answers. Eventually, the group loses the egg and Abby joins the group in a chase for it through a parade, looking for it at Chez Snobbe and eventually a circus. At at the circus, the egg gets into the hands of a juggler, in which Abby makes it known to him that it's their egg he's juggling and she's worried about it. The juggler asks her if the egg can bounce, to which she replies no, hence making the juggler worried too. Eventually the egg gets tossed and the group loses it. Barney suggests they look for it more and Cody says they've lost it. Abby lashes out at Cody due to him never wanting to look for the egg in the first place as she mentions that it was kid stuff to him. She then proceeds to ask Cody as to what's wrong with being a kid in general. Barney comforts her amid her frustration and reassures her that everything will be okay. With Barney cheering everyone up, Cody reassures her that they're gonna find the egg and that they won't give up until they do. Eventually, they find the egg in a cage in hot air balloon. Cody suggests they use their imaginations to get it, which stuns Abby. They use their imaginations to turn a log into an airplane and eventually Abby catches the egg during the ride. The group eventually makes it back home and Abby helps to explain to her grandparents as to where they were the whole time and what occurred, further helping to introduce Barney to them. When the egg hatches and they see the dream maker, Abby makes the guess that the dream maker's name is Twinken. Eventually, Twinken reveals that Abby's dream is to be a jockey and win a horse race, in which everyone is able to see her dream clearly.
