The following is an overview of Barney-related news and events that occurred in the year 1994. Although no new episodes aired on PBS during this year due to a lawsuit, it was considered by barneyonline.com to be the height of Barney's popularity.
Audio[]
- January 30: The radio show, Bedtime with Barney premieres.
- August 23: Barney's Favorites, Volume 2 is released to stores.
Events[]
- March 5-13: Barney Live! begins performances at Radio City Music Hall, New York City and plays there until March 13. All shows have sold out within the first 30 minutes of ticket sales. One of the performances was also released on home video.
- April 6: Barney travels to London, England in the United Kingdom to promote Barney & Friends and as it was set to air for the first time in the United Kingdom, specifically on "Rise & Shine" on the GMTV Children's program on Saturday mornings.[1]
- April 20: Barney visits the D.C. Public Library. Library Director and ALA President Hardy Franklin presented Barney with a "Library Hero" plaque.[2]
- April 22: Barney performs several live shows in Columbus, OH. 15,000 attend in total. The Barney Fan Club also reaches 700,000 members.
- June: It was announced that The Lyons Group and Warren Publishing agreed verbally to settle a lawsuit over the rights to the song "I Love You".[3]
- June 10: Barney made a surprise appearance at the Runnymede Public Library in Toronto to promote the launch of the Barney book line in Canada.[4]
- July 26: The Lyons Group hosted a screening of Imagination Island at their VSDA Island Party in Las Vegas, Nevada from 5PM-7PM at the Las Vegas Hilton in Ballroom C. Following the event was a sing along appearance and keepsake photo with Barney.
- August 8: In collaboration with UK channel The Children's Channel, Barney hosted several sing-along shows at Alton Towers during the "Summer Crunch" event.[5]
- November 24: Barney, Baby Bop and BJ performed "If You're Happy and You Know It" at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to promote the new Barney balloon, making it their first appearance in the parade.
Film[]
- Barney: The Movie was announced for a summer 1995 release, before being delayed and retitled. It was announced that the film was going be released by Geffen Pictures through Warner Bros Pictures.
Home video releases[]
- January 19: Let's Pretend with Barney is released to stores.
- April 27: Barney's Alphabet Zoo is released to stores.
- August 3: Barney Live! In New York City is released to video.
- September 14: Imagination Island is available for retailers to pre-order for their stores.
- October 4: Imagination Island is released on home video to stores.
Merchandise[]
- Barney received the 1994 ‘License of the Year’ Award from the Licensing Industry Merchandiser’s Association in honor of the sales and demand his products created.[6]

- January 13: Baby Bop's Foods is published.
- February 10: A Day with Barney is published.
- April 12: Barney's Imagination Island is published.
- April 22: Barney Says, "Please and Thank You" and Baby Bop Pretends are published.
- June 21: Baby Bop Goes to School is published.
- July 21: What Can It Be? is published.
- August: The premiere issues of Barney Magazine and Barney Family Magazine, published by Welsh Publishing Group Inc. and Barney Publishing, debuted.[7]
- September 30: Barney's Wonderful Winter Day is published.
- October 4: Barney & Baby Bop Follow that Cat!, BJ's Fun Week and BJ's Silly Story are published.
- October 10: Barney's Book of Opposites is published.
Television[]
- Barney & Friends begins airing outside of the United States and Canada, such as on GMTV in the UK and on SBC (now Mediacorp) in Singapore.
- April 6: GMTV airs a story on Barney that includes footage of a local live show that was performed. Barney & Friends begins to air in the UK.
- April 7: Barney made another UK appearance alongside creator Sheryl Leach on a BBC program, Good Morning with Anne and Nick to talk about how Barney & Friends could affect British children.
- April 14: Barney made an appearance on The Phil Donahue Show.
- April 24: Imagination Island originally airs on NBC.
- August 16 and 18: Barney Celebrates Children was supposed to air, but got delayed. PBS aired an alternative version of Barney Live! In New York City called Showstoppers from...Barney Live! in New York City.[8]
- December 4: Barney Celebrates Children airs on PBS.
