Gnomes are a small race, almost as short as halflings and more finely built than dwarves. Gnomes have dark to tan skin and dark hair. Dwarves are their distant cousins and they share the love of glittering things though gnomes have more affection and respect for the natural world than dwarves do. Gnomes love jokes and are very clever; some might even call them devious. Gnomes can be anything from fighters to illusionists and are far more capable than they appear.

Multi-Class Accessibility[]

Fighter / Thief, Fighter/Cleric, Illusionist/Thief, Fighter/Illusionist, Cleric/Illusionist, Cleric / Thief

Gnomes are a surprisingly useful race. The only mage class available to them is Illusionist, but this isn't a large burden as Illusion's barred school, Necromancy, does not have very many useful low-level spells.Though you lose out on a couple of useful higher level spells from the Necromancy school such as Animate Dead and Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting. In return for this restriction, illusionist gnomes are able to naturally raise their intelligence to 19.

Also, because they are forced into being Illusionists, they are the only race that can multi-class a wizard kit, which is a very nice perk. Their bonus to Wand and Spell saves are god-sends against two of the most damaging attack styles in the game. Generally speaking, gnomes do it better than half-elves for any multi-class option both enjoy. It's also worth noting gnomes are one of the two races who can access the cleric/thief multi-class option. It's an odd combo and you'll be limited to clubs and quarterstaves for weapons you can backstab with, but it is a fun class regardless. The penalty to wisdom can be overlooked due to the absurd amount of ways to up your wisdom permanently.

In-Game Description[]

Kin to dwarves, gnomes are noticeably smaller than their distant cousins. Gnomes, as they proudly maintain, are also less rotund than dwarves. Most have dark tan or brown skin, white hair, and rather large noses. Gnomes have lively and sly senses of humor, especially for practical jokes. They have a love for nature that is only matched by their love for gems and jewelry. There are two racial divisions of gnomes within the Realms: rock gnomes and deep gnomes (svirfneblin).

Gnomes have the following traits:

  • +2 bonus to Saving Throws vs. Rod/Staff/Wand and vs. Spell, with additional bonuses based on Constitution.
  • Infravision.
  • +15% Open Locks, +15% Find Traps, +15% Pick Pockets, +15% Move Silently, +10% Hide in Shadows, +10% Detect Illusion, +5% Set Traps.
  • +1 Intelligence, -1 Wisdom.

In-Game Depiction[]

Gnomes use the same sprite as dwarves. As the games lack a female sprite for the dwarven race there is no visual difference between female and male gnomes, even if female gnomes technically do not have facial hair.
