Flame Blade is a 2nd level priest spell. It creates a "flaming blade" that the caster can use in combat.

Description[]

With this spell, the caster causes a blazing ray of red-hot fire to spring forth from [their] hand. This blade-like ray is wielded as if it were a sword that the caster already knows how to use, hence there are no bonuses or penalties. If the caster successfully hits with the flame blade in melee combat, the creature struck suffers 1d4 points of slashing damage, plus an additional 1d2+4 points of fire damage. However, it is not a magical weapon in the normal sense of the term, so creatures struck only by magical weapons are not harmed by it.

Gameplay[]

This spell is for the caster only.

Upon completion of the spell casting, a special 3D graphic effect renders adjacent to the caster showing a flaming blade rising from the earth, and a text displays, reading <CASTER>: Casts Flame Blade.

The caster's main hand weapon slots are now occupied by the spell's evoked red-hot ray, and the flame blade can now be wielded in melee combat for the spell's duration.

The flame blade has a speed factor of 4 and a reach of 1 foot. It does not have a proficiency class, meaning it does not gain any benefits, nor does it impose penalties based on weapon proficiency.

Any successful hit with the blade inflicts 1d4 Slashing damage plus 1d2 Fire damage, the weapon is non-magical and unenchanted for the purposes of what it can strike.

The wielder's Strength can modify the weapon's attack rolls and damage if applicable.

If the player tries to adjust or rearrange the character's main hand weapon, a text will display, reading "Magical weapon in use".

Like all spell-created weapons, if a character dual-wields while the flame blade is active, their off-hand weapon will not suffer any off-hand THAC0 penalty.

Because it deals elemental damage, the fire damage portion bypasses magic resistance, and the flame will also ignore Stoneskin and Iron Skins protections.

The fire damage applied is assigned a Power level value of 2, this means that a protective spell such as Minor Spell Deflection or Minor Globe of Invulnerability will block that elemental damage.

The spell is also useful for finishing off Trolls and against creatures vulnerable to fire such as the Fission Slime.

Triva[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Flame Blade Priest spell differs slightly from the BG video game version.

This bladelike ray is wielded as if it were a scimitar, the creature struck suffers 1d4+4 points of damage, with a damage bonus of +2 (i.e., 7-10 points) if the creature is undead or is especially vulnerable to fire. If the creature is protected from fire, the damage inflicted is reduced by 2 (i.e., 1d4+2 points).

Spell Revisions mod has changed this divine spell, revising its effects, duration, scaling and description. See below:
Flame Blade
Level: 2
School: Evocation
Sphere: Elemental (Fire)
Range: Personal
Duration: 2 turns
Casting Time: 5
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: None

With this spell, the caster causes a blazing ray of red-hot fire to spring forth from his hand. The caster wields this blade-like ray as if proficient with the weapon, at his normal THAC0. At level 3, it functions as a magical weapon, dealing 2d6+1 points of fire damage, with an enchantment bonus of +1. For every other three experience levels of the spellcaster, this bonus increases by one, up to a total of +3 enchantment level, +3 to attack rolls, and +3 to damage for a 9th-level caster. Since the blade is immaterial, strength modifiers do not apply to attack rolls or damage, and attacks with the flame blade are considered melee touch attacks (+4 attack roll bonus).

Note:This mod version of the Flame Blade is superior in every way to the original version, especially with the scaling utility. The flame damage is non magical and has zero spell power level, and therefore can't be blocked by spell level protections.

This spell is only usable by Druid/Ranger/Shaman classes.
