Overview[]
Level 700, also known as the Lunarscape, is the 701st level in The Backrooms. It is a vast landscape of rocks, mountains, craters and various other structures resembling The Moon. It includes additional elements such as oxygen, lakes, underground oceans, and complex formations. Notably, it is inhabited by Lunari, the primary entities in this level, who are often seen exploring different biomes and structures for resources. The surface of Level 700 is composed of Moonstone. This material is exclusive to this level, and can be used to make remedy for some effects, particularly those of Cashew Water, Liquid Pain, Carpetvirus and Hydrolitis. The level has a day cycle of 12 hours, in contrary of the moon in the Frontrooms, which has a day cycle of approximately 14.75 days.
The level is very unstable, as the structures within it change places constantly after the day cycle, leading to wanderers that happen to stay for more than one day in the level to fall into The Void. Because of this, one's main priority upon landing in this level is to immediately start searching for exits.
The source of light in this level is unknown, but an anomalous shadow seems to circle around the level, creating its day cycle. The space visible at this level is most likely artificial, as the moon at this level shows signs of an atmosphere, such as water particles, oxygen, and light. This suggests that the "space" as we see it may just be the level's sky attempting to replicate the vacuum.
The level has a subterranean system, as it seems to have a sea underground, and as seen by Lunari activity, underground tunnels from which parts of the level can be entered very quickly.
An eerie wind-like noise is heard across the level, and its volume is incoherent, constantly changing from unsettlingly silent to noticeably loud.
Luna Villages[]
Luna Villages, also known as Moon Villages, are a common structure found in Level 700. These villages appear seemingly at random across the level, sometimes in clusters and other times scattered. Lunari can be found wandering around the villages, searching the buildings for Moonstone. The villages change locations daily, and different objects can be found inside the houses, such as Crates of Liquid Pain, chests with Moonstone, and rarely, Almond Water. There are no inhabitants inside the villages, so they are often targeted by M.E.G agents, groups, or wanderers for looting, although this can provoke the Lunari to attack. Villages often have a Lighthouse, abandoned neighborhoods, Motels, and mines. These are full of Lunari that are often found vandalizing and searching for goods, particularly in the houses and motels. The mines found in the level, despite having the most moonstone, are devoid of Lunari. This is thought to be because of the narrowness of these mines, making them uncomfortable to enter and loot.
The Luna Villages appear to be constructed using materials that bear a resemblance to those found in other levels. Various Wanderers have described the interior of the houses to resemble a deteriorating version of Level 5, while some have reported that the houses look like they belong to Level 0. The variations in the layouts of the villages appear to be influenced by the memories of other levels that the Wanderers have explored.
Lunar Caves[]
Lunar Caves are another common structure of Level 700. These caves are the main habitat of the Lunari, and where they are most found. They are presumably built by Lunari, and their size can vary between 2 miles to 5 miles in length. Holes are made in the cave by the Lunari in order to receive moonlight. Inside these caves, tons of moonstone, Liquid Pain, and even small amounts of Firesalt can be found. These are thought to be part of the Lunari's looting, and they can be looted from different levels aside from just Level 700. Lunari often ignore Wanderers entering the caves, unless a Wanderer threatens them or tries stealing their loot. Some caves can have underground systems made by the Lunari to get across the level more easily, which is most likely why there are reports of Lunari crawling out of holes in Level 700.
Caves can be found built right next to bodies of water, probably as a way for Lunari to have direct access to water. However, due to bodies of water changing locations due to the day cycle's system, often these are either a case of Lunari adapting to the instability of the level, or just pure chance.
The caves are usually made of Moonstone, which makes them difficult to break through. Interestingly, although it has been confirmed that these caves were constructed by the Lunari, there have been no recorded sightings or reports of them actually building the caves. Over time, the Level has shown the ability to preserve itself, as for unknown reasons the caves gradually recede into the surface, preventing them from taking up too much space in the Level.
Bodies Of Water[]
Subterranean Ocean[]
Beneath the surface of Level 700 there exists a Subterranean Ocean. This ocean appears to span the entire level. It is full of bacteria and like some lakes in the surface can carry the Hydrolitis Plague. It is very dense and has only been explored once by the M.E.G to confirm its existence. It is where an entity, The Moonbeast, resides in Level 700, though most of the time it's dormant.
The Subterranean Ocean, from samples taken by the M.E.G seems to be older than the moonstone on the surface. This has led to the theory Level 700 used to be different from what it is now, however, there is hardly any clear evidence to support this theory. However, judging by the unexplained appearance of water particles on the surface of Level 700, it is possible that this ocean has influenced the level a lot.
During the exploration, tons of Moonstone deep into the ocean were found, however looting it was extremely hard due to the pressure force greatly increasing when going deeper into the ocean. This is also another reason as to why exploring this part of Level 700 is advised against, however, the M.E.G plans to discover more about this ocean sometime in the future.
Overall, it's not safe to explore this part of Level 700, due to the high chances of contracting the Hydrolitis Plague and the Moonbeast.
Object 700: Moonstone[]
Moonstone is a mineral only found in Level 700 which has many uses, including medications, power sources, and even weaponry. It is found on the surface of Level 700, stored in chests in Luna Villages, and in the Subterranean Ocean. While it's a plain rock when not processed, giant chunks of Moonstone can process fusion within themselves, making them a source of power for small colonies. It can also be melted, liquified and then processed (usually with Carpet Fluid), serving as a remedy for some diseases across the backrooms. It's appearance can vary between tan and grey with a rugged exterior. Moonstone can also be used as a good material to create weapons, as it can withstand heat and is very tough. It has been used to create walls, sabers, and to store important objects. It is also used in refineries to upgrade items and even for creating complicated pieces of technology.
Moonstone has a dim orange glow whenever it is undergoing fusion, and is dangerous to come to contact with due to its heat. If a too small moonstone somehow undergoes fusion, it can catch on fire and even explode sometimes. Moonstone when liquified despite being able to cure diseases must be taken in generous amounts, as it can intoxicate a Wanderer when consumed inappropriately. It can rarely even result in death if consumed excessively.
Moonstone was discovered by the M.E.G in 1969 after a group of agents ventured into a mine in a Luna Village, and an agent retrieved a sample of Moonstone, and it ended up being taken to Base Alpha. It was not long before experimentation started on the Moonstones, and larger quantities of it were retrieved to various bases
until 1982. Moonstone then started becoming widespread amongst groups in the Backrooms, specially in The Architects. Other groups such as the Party Crashers also started using Moonstone but more for it's offensive capabilities rather than medication, as it is easily replaceable with Almond Water in that area. Eventually, Moonstone became essential for most weapon building around the backrooms during the 2000s, however it started being dropped by groups using it for weapons as Firesalt became more popular, and it's abundance as a form of medication has slowly but surely lowered overtime with the accessibility of Almond Water increasing amongst many groups, though today it still is a reliable source of power and material for architecture in small buildings or colonies.
Glowing Moonstone []
A variant of moonstone which can glow multiple colors, but mostly, a lightish blue. They are found very rarely across the level, and are hard to tell from common moonstone during daytime. They glow in the dark, and for unknown reasons, they emit coldness instead of heat. They are more common to find in the Subterranean Ocean than in the surface. Glowing Moonstone cannot be liquified, as most of the times, it results in them combusting. These are used to make Moonlanterns.
Entities[]
Lunari[]
Lunari are a group of entities that are found widespread across space levels the backrooms, however their main habitat is Level 700. They all wear a odd astronaut suit that covers their actual appearance. There's a theory the suits are part of their body, as they seem to become hostile if the suit's cloth is attacked. They often come in groups and they are known for looting colonies, levels and vandalizing other levels with graffiti. Lunari are generally neutral to wanderers, however if they are threatened, stolen of their loot or are confronted, they can become hostile. Their sizes can vary between 8 feet and maximum 11 feet. They seem to be resistant to extreme heats, as they can survive temperatures below 70°C.
Moonbeast[]
The Moonbeast is a usually dormant entity in the Subterranean Ocean. It is 86 feet tall and has multiple eyes and sharp teeth, a bundle of hair on its neck, and rugged grey skin meant to replicate the surface of Level 700. While it being dormant causes this entity to not be much of a constant threat, when too much activity or noise is done in the surface or the Subterranean Ocean, it can be awakened.
It is extremely hostile. To identify it's presence, whenever the Moonbeast awakens, Level 700 starts glowing. This is the entity that makes Level 700 Class 4, because of the danger associated with it. Wanderers report hearing screeching from across the Level before encountering it, described as a mix between a lion, a whale and a bear. It can be awakened by the smallest noises. All Lunari seem to retreat back to their caves whenever the Moonbeast awakens, however in many cases, the Moonbeast has been documented to ignore the Lunari. Attempts to attack the Moonbeast often are futile, and only lets the Moonbeast know your location, further endangering any wanderer who attempts this. The Moonbeast has shown to be able to take on multiple soldiers easily as well as remain unaffected by most weaponry, so the best way to avoid it is attempting to leave the Level or running into a mine and waiting for it to go away.
Some Wanderers have managed to survive the Moonbeast however, and they've been able to document their experience, which has allowed for further documentation of the Moonbeast.
The Eclipse[]

The Eclipse is an event in Level 700 which occurs very rarely. During the eclipse, 2 objects, one which appears to take the form of the sun, and the other one a unidentified celestial object, align with eachother. This causes Level 700 to gain a blood red coloration.
Typically, the event lasts about 30 minutes, but there are reports of it lasting from 2 to 6 hours. There is an unconfirmed theory that the duration of the event is influenced by the number of wanderers who have stumbled upon Level 700 since the last Eclipse.
During this event, all signs of life as well as the structures disappear. This includes the entities. However, this event is a mental hazard, and once it begins, the wanderer immediately starts feeling it's effects. The wanderer starts having a feeling of dread and impeding chaos. This often results into them panicking. The level also overtime starts losing it's oxygen.
The redness of the level during this event may only cause the Wanderer to panic more. The wanderer when looking at the eclipse will start following it's light aimlessly, however it is unreachable. This often results in a wanderer falling to the wretched cycle, if they don't, the level will only keep losing oxygen and the mental hazards will keep intensifying until the Wanderer dies due to lack of oxygen. A interviewed Wanderer affected by the light stated that it heard voices repeating words such as "You are so close.." "The light guides you into salvation.." "The Bloodmoon is your new home.."
Same aforementioned wanderer who has survived this event describes it as "hell incarnate", and it appears that the mental hazards in this event do leave lasting effects on wanderers even if they survive, including PTSD from red places or objects, paranoia of progressing through the backrooms, and even insanity.
In the history of Level 700, only 6 Eclipses have happened, which makes them very rare, but they remain a concern when it comes to staying on the level for longer periods of time, for whoever is unfortunate enough to be caught in The Bloodmoon, only sees red for the rest of their short yet cruel tragedy.
Colonies And Outposts[]
Colonies were attempted by the M.E.G back in 1971, but due to the nature of the level they eventually failed, and human residence has since never been possible.
