General Rules
Rules for users and editors of this wiki:
- Vandalism of any kind is not tolerated. Inserting nonsense into pages, removing all content, etc. will be automatically reverted, and will result in a block for the offender. New accounts with little to no edit history will be blocked indefinitely on their first vandalism offense. Please note that if you wish to remove your own page, do not blank it; ask a moderator to delete it for you.
- Harassment, slurs, and general disrespectful behavior are not tolerated. It is expected to be respectful to all; harassing or calling people slurs will lead to a ban. Harassment of other users is a violation of the Fandom Terms of Use.
- Using alt accounts as sockpuppets to evade a ban or rig a vote will result in a non-negotiable ban for all accounts involved. Alts will be banned permanently; if you rig a vote, all alts will blocked across all of Fandom.
- Edit-warring is not allowed. You must have a valid reason for reverting someone else's edit. If someone is consistently reverting your edits, let a moderator know rather than reverting it back-and-forth.
- Do not “sandbox” someone’s page without permission: If you are not a moderator, do not attempt to do their job yourself; moving a user's page to their Sandbox because you feel it fails to meet writing guidelines is considered minimodding and will be reverted with a warning. Instead, it is recommended to add either the rewrite template or deletion template.
Rules for Page Creation
NOTE: If you wish to not be restricted by any of the following rules, see the Backrooms Freewriting Wiki for a rule-free experience.
- All pages must satisfy the following requirements:
- Originality: The concept or subject of the page should be unique and creative, developing an aspect of the Backrooms that has not previously been explored. Imitations and variants of existing pages are highly discouraged.
- Tone: The page must be written in a mature and professional manner. A strictly clinical tone is not mandatory, but effort should be displayed, with at least a basic level of subtlety and nuance.
- Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG): The page should be written in fluent, unbroken English, with little to no errors.
- Format: The page must be structured and organized in such a way that its content is conveyed clearly and coherently.
- Completion: The topic of the page should be explored and developed with a sufficient amount of length and detail relative to its concept—otherwise, it cannot be considered complete. Work-in-progress (WIP) and unpolished works may not be published, and should remain in your Sandbox until completed. However, this does not prevent you from further expanding a page of yours that is already considered "complete." It is also recommended that you get critique from another member of the community or an active moderator before publishing your page. Do not put categories in sandboxes.
- All pages must fit in the Backrooms setting. Although the exact nature of the Backrooms is subject to broad interpretation, your page should not seem out of place among the rest; it should relate to the Backrooms and connect with (and preferably link to) existing pages.
- Pages should not conflict with each other. Canon-specific pages may have more leeway, but continuity in the lore should be maintained across all pages; do not outright contradict anything else on the wiki.
- Handle sensitive topics with care. If you wish to include subjects in your page such as politics, mental health, religion, etc., do proper research on the matter so that you are not misrepresenting or harmfully portraying it.
- Plagiarism of content from other sources is not allowed. Porting external content from other Backrooms-related wikis may only be allowed with permission from the original creator(s), proof of permission, and attributed credit to them on the page – unless you yourself are the original creator. Failure to provide proof may result in a block for plagiarism. Additionally, you may not reference Backrooms content not originating from this wiki. This ensures content used here is not linked to any copyrighted media whatsoever.
- Pages with a theme (i.e. pages that have a div wrapped around the whole page, or use T:CSS) should be checked for readability standards in compliance with FANDOM. Use inspect element or certain websites to check contrast between texts and backgrounds. Also, be considerate with color choices for colorblind users. Do not include bright flashing imagery with no warning in consideration of photosensitive users.
- Article naming rules:
- Levels may not be numbered higher than 1000 or lower than -1000 until all 1000 positive and negative level slots are filled. Likewise, Entities and Objects are restricted to 1-1000, and may not be numbered higher or lower until those slots have been filled, respectively.
- Sublevels may not have more than two digits after the decimal point.
- Symbols/emojis are not allowed in names/titles to stay organized. Similarly, anomalous levels may only be titled as words.
- "-rooms" pages are not allowed: They imply separateness from the Backrooms.
- Canons must be first published with at least 5 pages to accompany their hub page. This is primarily to prevent low-effort canons with little to no base lore from being uploaded. Canons will be removed if they fall below this threshold.
- Using text-generating AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT) to write your page is prohibited. This wiki is a collaborative writing project, so using AI for content creation is pointless. You may use AI to generate images (as long as it looks fairly realistic) and to check for SPaG errors, but any other usage is discouraged.
- Miscellaneous restrictions:
- Popular, valuable, or lore-significant pages may not be edited and/or rewritten to be part of a canon if they were not in one initially. Examples include The Main Nine, Level 37, Level 399, The Void, etc. Articles may be granted such immunity at the discretion of wiki staff.
- New dimensions are not allowed. Lore is significantly shaped by and always subject to the influence of dimensions. Currently, there are only 2 dimensions: The Frontrooms and The Backrooms. It is likely to stay this way.
- Articles generally may not be rewritten without the original author's permission, unless the original author is inactive and/or an original author cannot be confirmed (typically on old pages).
- You may not create personal categories and/or templates. For example, adding a category or template called
Gary's Pages
to your articles is not allowed; this bloats the category/template list on both individual pages and the wiki itself, in addition to being completely unnecessary. If you want to allow readers to view all of your other articles, you can either link your profile in your article's credits, or make the personal template in a Sandbox. Sandboxes can be transcluded like templates by prefixing the sandbox name with your user page, like so -{{User:Gary/Name}}
.
Breaking these rules may cause your page to be sandboxed, deleted, or result in disciplinary action if necessary.
Discussion Rules
These are the rules for the Discussions section of the Backrooms Wiki.
- Do not roleplay in page comments or discussion threads. There is a post category on the Freewriting Wiki for roleplaying.
- Only discussions and posts pertaining to the Backrooms Wiki and the Backrooms concept as a whole are allowed. If it does not relate to the Backrooms or the Wiki, it belongs in Freewriting. Off-topic posts, unrelated writing/art/music, spam, memes, and nonsensical posts that do not have any purpose or content to them will be deleted. This applies to post replies as well.
- Harassment, slurs, and generally disrespectful behavior are not allowed. It is expected to be respectful to all.
- Do not advertise. This includes topics such as YouTube channels, other wikis, games, and more.
- Posts relating to possibly controversial topics and/or drama are not allowed. Everyone is welcome here, but discussions pertaining to politics, orientations, ongoing drama, etc. should be kept to a minimum as they have nothing to do with the Backrooms nor the Wiki and are likely to incite arguments.
Breaking these rules will cause the deletion of your post/reply and potentially a block, especially if you repeat this.
