Level !^2

Level !^2

Level -250 is one of the deadliest negative levels of the Backrooms; one should never enter this level intentionally unless equipped with the right equipment.

Level -250 consists of several seemingly abandoned sidewalks, branching in multiple directions. Each sidewalk extends linearly for an unknown length cutting through a thick forest. There are poles and pylons in a static blood-red sky with, sometimes, clouds. At first, this level might seem safe due to the visible lack of entities, but do not be mistaken—this level is incredibly lethal; once a wanderer enters, they should run as fast as possible because nowhere is safe. Almost everything is pitch black, absorbing light, except for the sidewalks, some alleyways, and one unique about 25 miles away pylon. Bring extra light sources as they may malfunction unexpectedly. A faint rustling sound from an unknown source can also be heard occasionally. Once one enters the level, they will begin rapidly losing sanity; bringing Almond Water is needed, as no known almond water is located. Alternatively, wanderers may pick up the energy bars perhaps found on the ground, albeit those are somewhat uncommon.

As one runs further down Level -250, you will find several alleyways. However, these are traps that you shouldn't enter these alleyways if the wanderer wishes to survive. Also, exposed wires coming from the utility poles hang unnaturally low. All utility poles have live wires that can kill with a single touch. Walking deep into the forest along some paths may lead to the Chromyl River, the deadliest non-entity hazard in the area.

Most likely, the biggest reason as to why so many die when entering this level is Level -250's only entities, Predatory Pylons. They look just like their non-sentient counterparts but are capable of movement. They move somewhat quickly and can easily kill by crushing any wanderers with their supports. This is the sole reason that a wanderer should never stand still in this level, and also why one must constantly be on the move, lest they get crushed by the entities.

Chromyl River

CR

An Image of Chromyl River. Wanderer's body was found with backside corroded skin and tumors. Be careful, wanderer.

CR

Chromyl River is a river of undetermined length, composed of a blood-red liquid that gives off a deadly red smoke. This river is the only place that Predatory Pylons will stay away from; however, the river offers an excruciating death if one remains too long. The liquid and the smoke it gives are toxic, corrosive, carcinogenic, and sometimes even explosive. After some studies, the liquid was determined to have the same molecular structure as Chromyl Chloride, a dangerous chemical found in the Frontrooms. The liquid still has some anomalous properties; for example, part of the liquid might experience zero gravity and start floating about, spreading itself and the smoke around, or the liquid might suddenly form into semi-solid bubbles, which will then burst, spreading the liquid everywhere. Being around the liquid also causes insanity. Most of the time, however, the liquid is relatively calm. Due to its anomalous properties, the liquid found in the Backrooms has been named Chromyl Backrie due to its similarities to Chromyl Chloride.

Never drink or jump into the liquid, no matter what—the human body can easily succumb to corrosion and destroy one's organs from the inside. Furthermore, the liquid is very carcinogenic, meaning it increases the risk of cancer significantly. If a wanderer does encounter this river, they should turn back immediately. If that is not an option, run over the bridge that each sidewalk passing over the river offers as fast as possible, but even one might get a few painful blisters on the legs. Stick to the main sidewalk unless necessary to use smaller ones that cut deeper into the forest due to potential dangers. Attempts are still being made to find the source of the Chromyl River.

Entities

As mentioned, the only entity in Level -250 is Predatory Pylons. Those are sentient and are the only type of entity residing on this level; however, they also behave somewhat differently relative to Predatory Pylons found in other levels, and, like most things within the level, they are pitch black. They range from 20m to over 50m in height. When entering a level, they will be about 120 meters behind you, although immediately will enter their destructive state and start chasing you unless they are in the line of sight. These pylons prefer to stick to the forest around the sidewalks and will not move directly onto the sidewalks. It is recommended to avoid entering the surrounding forest for safety reasons. These entities can be stopped by simply staring at them: this ensures they will stop moving, albeit remember that even a single blink allows them to move. They will also make a metallic scraping noise and loud bangs when they are on the move. Once they get within 10 feet of a wanderer, the wanderer will likely get crushed by their legs, instantly getting killed.

Logs

Two members of the Sapphire Outpost, based in Level 11, named Samuel and Robert, after tripping over something, have managed to noclip together into Level -250.

>LOG: Pylons are Evil!
>LOG: Pylons are Evil!

BEGIN LOG

Robert: Ow, what the... hey Sam! Get off of me!

Samuel: Ugh, sorry mate, are you alr- ... where the hell are we?

Robert: ...What? Is this a new level or something? We were in Level 11 a second ago...

Samuel: Whatever. Let's see what this place is and get out of here.

Faint scraping and banging noises from the Predatory Pylons

Robert: Hold on, do you hear that? Some scraping sound.

Samuel: Yeah... All the more reason to get out of here! Come on!

Robert: Fine...

As they walk down the sidewalk, the scraping and banging gets louder

Samuel: Shit! We need to run now as the noise is getting louder! Let me get some communication with the base!

Both begin sprinting. Robert begins to tire after 15 seconds.

Robert: Ugh! I'm feeling tired. I think my legs are giving up...

Samuel: Hold on, Robert! I'm trying to communicate with the base, hold on-

Robert gets crushed by the Predatory Pylons

Samuel: What the fuck!? Come on! The communication isn't working!? Come on... Yes! Finally-

Samuel presumably strikes a low-hanging live wire and gets killed. The Sapphire Outposts shortly respond to Samuel's communications.

Sapphire Outpost: Samuel? Are you alright? We were looking for you!

...

Sapphire Outpost: Samuel? Where is Robert? Do you copy?

...

Sapphire Outpost: Samuel, do you copy? Samuel...

...

END LOG

Samuel's body was found a few days later. Robert's body was never found.

One Member of The Base Flickers (Backroom Colonists) in Level 1, called Oswald, found a strange box. After getting near it, he tripped over something and noclipped into Level -250.

>LOG: River of Terror

>LOG: River of Terror

BEGIN LOG

Oswald: Huh? What's this? What a strange box. I must report this to the base.

Oswald begins communication

Base: Oswald? Do you copy?

Oswald: Yes. I've come across a new box we haven't seen before in the reports. Must I rummage?

Base: Approach with caution.

Oswald walks towards the box slowly. However, he trips over something.

Oswald: Wo-Woah!

Base: Oswald! Is everything okay? Oswald, do you copy?

Oswald: Ugh, yeah... I just tripped over somethin- ...It... looks like I have entered some new level. ... uh, Blood-red sky, pitch black forest, and pylons. Definitely not Level 1.

Base: Remain calm as we will send an investigation team. Please be careful as you proceed downwards through the Level. Let caution be your guide.

Oswald: I hear metallic scraping and banging, probably from an entity. Not a good sign! I'm getting out of here!

Base: Do remain calm! Is there anywhere where you could hide from the entity?

Oswald: The forest, most likely! It's very uncharted territory, but we have to take the risk!

Oswald enters the forest via the sidewalk. He doesn't stop running for more than ten minutes until the metallic scraping and banging cease.

Oswald: The scraping stopped... phew! That's a relief!

Base: Indeed it is, though you have entered a forest. Please describe your surroundings.

Oswald: Well, I mentioned it before, it's mostly pitch black, can't see anything without a flashlight... wait. There's some red fog over there... Should I go for it?

Base: I'm not so sure-

Communications break

Oswald: What were you saying? ...Hello? ...Crap. The communications got busted. Well, I'm entirely alone now. I have no other choice but to proceed along this dangerous level.

Oswald walks towards the mist.

Oswald: What the... it's coming from some blood-red liquid.

Oswald feels a sharp pain in his legs.

Oswald: Ow, what the hell?! ...where on earth did I get blisters from?

Oswald: It hurts so damn much! ...I need to get out of here before my legs fall off..! Help!! This is ruthless...

Oswald attempts to run off, but the pain in his legs spikes. He falls over in pain, his whole body now coated in the Chromyl Backride.

Oswald: My body! It hurts so much! Why does it feel like burning?! Oh god! Come on! Why did communications have to be cut off?! God save me, for no one else can!

Oswald yelps in pain for a few minutes before being capable of a few words. He is coughing the whole time.

Oswald: Well... this is... it... Goodbye.... cruel world....

Oswald dies. Base manages to reconnect.

Base: Apologies for the communications, Oswald. Are you still there?

...

Base: Oswald?

END LOG

Oswald's body was found two weeks later, by now half-dissolved.

Colonies and Outposts

The nature here does not allow for colonies or outposts. There have been several attempts before the understanding of the Predatory Pylons and Chromyl River that all ended in catastrophe, including, but not limited to:

The Deep Dark Forest Colony

  • A group of two who attempted to start a logging business.

The Solace Home

  • A 1-man outpost, attempting to find some solace in the Backrooms.

The Backhand Colonies

  • A group of 5 small colonies intending to survive and thrive at this level.

All of the colonies/outposts were killed, presumably by the Predatory Pylons or Chromyl River.

Entrances and Exits

Escaped

An Image of Level -250 50 miles away from the entrance. Wanderer was later found in Level 399.

Escaped

Due to the level's recent discovery, not many entrances and exits have been discovered. Until more are discovered, these are the entrances/exits that have been confirmed:

Entrances

  • Reaching the end of the Dreadxit in Level 455 has the possibility of sending wanderers here.
  • Noclipping through a 5m x 5m wooden box containing metallic items in Level 1 will get you here.
  • Smashing a red gemfruit on the ground in Level -5 causes you to be forcibly no-clipped here.
  • Going into a red forest on one of the islands in Level 910 may lead you here.
  • Entering a red-colored hut in Level 426 leads one here.
  • Noclipping through an antenna in Level 48 leads one here.
  • Climbing to the top of a pylon in Level 803 will lead you here on the condition that you are feeling paranoid and haven't slept for three days.

Exits

  • Noclipping through the sidewalks will get one to The Void.
  • Noclipping through any tree at most 2m away from Chromyl River will get you to Level -5. This will result in an irreversible loss of up to 20 IQ points, though, along with severe impairment to the rest of the body.
  • There should be a patch of grey and wet grass in the middle of every sidewalk, about 17 miles from the entrance. Noclip through it to get to either Level 1, Level 4 or Level 10
  • Finding the one non-sentient pylon with color (25 miles from the entrance) and noclipping into it can take you to Level -5.
  • A few people have been crazy enough to run farther than 50 miles. After reaching the 50-mile mark, one will immediately become unconscious. After this, one will find oneself in The Final Arcade or, less commonly the The Rosatin Hotel.
