No Hope

It had been six days of traversing the dreadful mono-yellow maze of the Backrooms, and six days of being desperate for survival… My water supply was slowly running low as the time I spent here in this wasteland continued. There was never an exit in sight. I tried drinking the fluid off the carpet thinking it was a water supply… horrible mistake. I couldn’t believe I was even able to move.

Everywhere I went

was just…

the mono-yellow madness...

over…

and over…

The irritating buzzing of the fluorescent lights had been driving me insane. Each passing day, I was driven towards insanity more and more. I’d had three mental breakdowns so far… or was it four? I thought to myself, “I'm not going to survive.” To think your last moments of life are going to be rotting away in a buzzing yellow hell is laughable. Screaming in agony, with no one to be with you… It all sounds like a rushed made-up story. No one would take a second thought when they hear about it.

…right?

I was having enough. There was only one way out of this…

I moved towards an enclosed part of the buzzing dreadful maze of terror, and lied down on the carpeted floor. I took one last look of my surroundings: just the same mono-yellow madness from when I first found myself here.

Howbeit, my teary eyes noticed something...

An
irregularly
colored wall

The presumably infinite maze of walls colored mono-yellow was finally broken, by an attention-grabbing unordinary pale-yellow wall.

My perplexed mind jumped to many conclusions...

Is it a trap?
Am I hallucinating?
Is it an exit?
Shall I approach it?
Is this a dream this entire time?
Freedom?
Is my dreadful journey over?
Am I going home?
Should I?
Is this true?

I was hesitant at first, but I realized I had nothing to lose; must I start to rot away right this moment, or delay my inevitable demise? I was going to meet my demise regardless. I gradually dragged my weary body across the floor, losing breath every second. I can still feel my exposed, dry hands hurt as I pulled myself towards the wall. After less than a minute of excruciating pain pulling my energy-drained body, I got close enough to the wall to touch it, and once I did, I saw a glitch right in front of my eyes. Not long after, I blacked out.

I opened my eyes, and saw a room nothing like the anything I had seen before. W- Was that manila paper? I was shockingly able to get up. I think I’d got enough rest to restore a bit of my energy. I took note of my surroundings; a lone table and two chairs. Additionally, the lights were much less intense, and I did not pick up the ear-splitting buzzing, which I was glad was gone for good.

I sat down on one of the chairs to earn more rest. This area felt like a breeze of fresh air from the mono-yellow and hum-buzzing of the lights. I shut my eyes…

*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*

Out of nowhere, I heard spontaneous knocks, presumably from the outside. It was resounding enough to take me out of my sleep. I paused in silence for a brief moment -- I thought it was just me hallucinating again. I looked around the room again, yet did not note anything out of the ordinary. Suddenly there were

*Knock* *Knock*

two additional knocks. I flinched, which caused me to trip over a chair right onto the floor. I expected to bruise my head, and for the rest of my body to land on the floor afterwards. However, I felt my head fall through the floor. I glanced down, only to see in horror the mono-yellow madness right below my very eyes. Right after my horrific realization, I fell on the moist carpeted floors right on my back.

The fall was painful—I groaned, and wasn't able to get up at all for several minutes. I felt instant bursts of pain when I tried doing so. Noticing that I landed back on the buzzing hell with no chances of escape, I began to sob forcefully. W-Why must this wo-world do this to me? I could only hear my frustrated and miserable voice echo throughout the desolate maze. I glanced towards the floor, and continued sobbing.

A Way Out

Hours had passed by. I had no idea how much, but it felt like eternity. I looked over my body and noticed multiple bruises. My toes, as well as my hands, were feeling numb—I must had fractured them from the fall. I was hardly even able to get up. I examined my surroundings, and the irregularly colored wall was nowhere to be seen. With that being noted of, I decided to trek across the buzzing barren land; if I had found one thing abnormal in this abnormal dimension, then there must be more of it. Due to my injuries, I kept stumbling whilst walking, and was evidently offbeat. Many times, I was almost certain I would fall, only to regain my balance right after. Nonetheless, I persisted wandering the maze—each step felt like I was losing energy. I had to find something quick before I fully exhausted myself after another couple of hours.

After a dozen minutes, I had yet to find something that stands out. I had to halt soon; my energy was depleting swiftly and I was beginning to entertain my thoughts of giving up. That is, when I stumbled across something.

A "peculiar" corridor.

I took a glimpse at it and found a grainy white door at the end. It felt out of place, in spite of my thoughts that being so out of place meant that it was an exit. I was at a standstill while my mind was deciding if I should go near it at all. I also seemed to hear it emitting static of some sort. Ultimately, I chose to bravely proceed toward it; I thought that either I started to rot away now or delay it. As I got nearer and nearer to the grainy door, the static noise ever so slowly took over my surroundings and the buzzing was getting less significant. Soon enough, I found myself right in front of the door. My eyes saw static creeping up on my far peripheral vision, along with a strange feeling tingling in my brain. Some bit of me was reconsidering if this was a good idea. Nevertheless, I budged towards the side, and opened the door, expecting the worst.

Nothing happened, aside from the gush of wind entering the maze. Wait, wind? That wasn’t supposed to be here. Curious, I peeked through the door. There it was.

Reality.

My mood shifted from confusion and despair to relief and gratitude the likes of which I had never felt. I rushed down the stairs, closing the door behind me to seal the nerve-wracking buzzing dimension off from the genuine world. Albeit, whilst I was doing so, I felt a sudden flashbang, and my surroundings were flooded with unpleasantly bright light. Dizziness followed quickly. I tumbled on the ground. Thankfully, I was off the stairs and thus didn't experience severe pain. I got up and looked behind me, and saw the lights dimming down. However, the prominent hum-buzz was still lingering in my head, which was a bummer. I examined my surroundings of reality, and noticed something amiss—where was everyone? This definitely didn’t look like the United States.

I gazed back at where I came from, and saw an alarming amount of CCTV cameras, all of which were pointed right at me. I anxiously waved at them, as to not feel like some stranger, but I felt like they were staring into my soul…

I eventually discovered I was in London, and I was perplexed as to how I ended up so far away from my home state Pennsylvania. I figured that all my walks in the hellish dimension were equivalent to thousands of miles on Earth. The signature buzzing trapped in my head was fortunately progressively fading away, but in place, I heard someone call out my name.

"Eva!"

I gazed closely at where I heard it coming from, yet didn't spot an individual. The voice curiously sound familiar too… Hopefully, it's just me hallucinating. I need to get going. I need to return home.

But,

at last,

I've found it.

A Way Out.

At last...
