Lord Paramount of the Mander[1] or Lord Paramount of the Reach[2] is a title granted by the Iron Throne to the liege lord of the Reach within the Seven Kingdoms. The title refers to the great river of the region, the Mander.

History

House Gardener, the Kings of the Reach, were extingished at the Field of Fire during Aegon's Conquest. When King Aegon I Targaryen marched to Highgarden, the castle was yielded by Harlan Tyrell, High Steward of Highgarden. Aegon the Conqueror granted the castle and the Reach to House Tyrell, naming Harlan the Lord Paramount of the Mander and Warden of the South.[3]

Other houses of the Reach protested their becoming vassals of an "upjumped steward", however. Houses Florent, Oakheart, Peake, Redwyne, and Rowan were families with more prestigious histories and closer blood ties to the Gardeners, but unlike the Tyrells they had fought against Aegon during the Conquest.[2]

Quotes

You Starks were kings once, the Arryns and the Lannisters as well, and even the Baratheons through the female line, but the Tyrells were no more than stewards until Aegon the Dragon came along and cooked the rightful King of the Reach on the Field of Fire. If truth be told, even our claim to Highgarden is a bit dodgy, just as those dreadful Florents are always whining.[7]
