In New Leaf[]
In New Leaf, an information board in the aquarium will list information about this creature.
"Mantis shrimp have long, sickle-shaped legs and thick carapaces covering both their bodies and tails. They strike captured prey with claws powerful enough to crack the shells of even the toughest crabs. They are a popular dish with fans of seafood, though females with eggs are worth more than males."
In New Horizons[]
Upon donation or selecting "Tell me more about this!", Blathers the curator will say:
"Think carefully before you mock the mantis shrimp for its diminutive size. I warn you, it's itching for a fight! A pugilist through and through, this brightly hued fellow packs a punch unparalleled on land or sea. Not only are its forelimbs shaped like clubs and scythes, its arms are naturally spring-loaded too! Thus the mantis shrimp's high-speed blows crack open crabs and oyster shells with ease. And should you grab it with your hands, you might discover why it's called "the thumb splitter" too!"

Trivia[]
- In New Horizons, if the mantis shrimp is set as a furniture item, and the player interacts with the fish tank, the mantis shrimp will punch the tank and a temporary crack will form; following a quiet glass breaking sound. The crack will disappear after a few seconds.
Further information[]
- Main article: Mantis shrimp on Wikipedia
Mantis shrimp, otherwise known as Stomapods, are a species of marine crustacean that typically grow between 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) in length. The species in New Leaf appears to be Squilla mantis, which make their home in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Easter Atlantic Ocean. These stomapods are common throughout their range, making them common catch for the fishing industry. They have gone by nicknames such as "sea locust", "prawn killers", and "thumb splitters".
The species in New Horizons appears to be Odontodactylus scyllarus, otherwise known as the "Peacock," "Harlequin," "Clown," or "Rainbow" Mantis Shrimp. This species is known for its vivid coloration, as well as its ability to "punch" with its appendages at a rate that is equivalent to that of a bullet. This "punch" allows it to break shells, carapaces, and even aquarium glass. This is reflected when one interacts with the tank of a mantis shrimp in New Horizons, as the shrimp punches and temporarily cracks the wall of its enclosure.
