Fruit are consumable items found in several Yoshi games. They're used for many different purposes.
Games[]
Super Mario World[]
A round fruit, referred to as a "berry" in the Super Mario World manual, debuted alongside Yoshi. All berries grew on bushes, and there were three color variants: red, pink and green. Each berry would give different effects depending on the type and amount consumed.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]
In this game and its remake, watermelons appear in three different colors: red, blue and green. Each melon allows Yoshi to spit out a different type of projectile.
Yoshi's Story[]
Fruits are a large aspect of Yoshi's Story, as the plot involves recovering a fruit tree, known as the "Super Happy Tree" from Baby Bowser. It's required for Yoshi to consume thirty fruit to complete a level. There are seven types of fruit Yoshi can eat: melons, bananas, apples, watermelons, grapes, peppers and a special Heart Fruit.
Before the start of a level, the level's "lucky fruit" is picked at random. Consuming a lucky fruit will fully replenish a Yoshi's health, eating a Yoshi's favorite fruit or melon will restore three health, and eating any other non-pepper fruit will restore one health. Each Yoshi's favorite fruit corresponds to their color; Green Yoshi likes watermelons, Yellow Yoshi likes bananas, Red Yoshi and Pink Yoshi like apples, and Blue Yoshi and Light Blue Yoshi like grapes. All Yoshi (species) dislike Peppers (and lose health when they consume them) excluding Black Yoshi and White Yoshi. Black Yoshi and White Yoshi also have no favorite fruit and will restore three health by eating any. Completing a level by eating thirty melons earns the player a special bonus.
Heart Fruits only appear once six fruits of the same type are consumed sequentially (excluding pepper and other Heart Fruit). Consuming a Heart Fruit gives Yoshi invulnerability, infinite eggs, and the ability to transform enemies into fruit with a ground pound for a limited time. Peppers and Heart Fruit do not count toward the thirty required fruit for the level.
Yoshi Touch & Go[]
Fruit appeared in this game; Yoshi used them to get Eggs.
Super Mario Sunshine[]
In this game, the mechanics for fruit are quite different. First, Mario must find a Yoshi egg and bring to it the fruit that it desires (this fruit will be pictured above the Yoshi egg in a thought bubble), then it will hatch. Mario can then ride the Yoshi, who can spray enemies with juice, which is more powerful than the water Mario regularly uses. This juice is also used to dissolve the yellow moving butterfat seen in various levels throughout the game. Yoshi can eat six different kinds of fruit: pineapples, pears (these turn Yoshi and his juice orange), green coconuts, bananas (which turn Yoshi and his juice pink), peppers, and durians (which turn Yoshi and his juice purple). When his juice is low, Yoshi can eat some fruit to restore it to full.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
The round fruits from Super Mario World return, each with small value gained upon consumption. There are three new variants of this fruit, however: the Dash Pepper, Blimp Fruit, and Bulb Berry, each with transforming effects. Dash Peppers, as the name implies, turns Yoshi into Dash Yoshi, changing his color to orange, and allowing him to run at super high speeds and scale steep slopes, which normally can't be done. The Blimp Fruit turns Yoshi cyan and causes him to inflate, allowing him to reach higher places, which normally can't be done, even with a Flutter Jump. The Bulb Fruit changes Yoshi's colour to yellow and illuminates' darkness around him, unveiling hidden platforms.
Yoshi's Woolly World[]
In this game, most fruits appear as beads for the bonus mini game in a few themed areas. The watermelon which first appears in level 7 by World 1 allows your chosen Yoshi to shoot seeds towards enemies and sponge obstacles.
