[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:40, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Out of the Blue SLC.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Out of the Blue SLC.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Ирука13 15:07, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ray cat depiction

[edit]

Your artistic render of a Ray cat is inspiring and intriguing. At first I thought the cat might be an extraterrestrial depicted on the surface of Mars. Given the proposed application of Ray Cats, it might more likely be meant to depict the Nevada desert. Interestingly, both "Aliens" and "Nuclear Radiation" are associated with the Nevada desert region, making either interpretation equally valid. (The source image listed for the background is actually a "Desert near Riyadh", Saudi Arabia.)

User:Tamzin noted at Talk:Ray_cat#Glowing_green? that the study proposing "Ray cats" does not specify an appearance & also is not specifically about modifying the appearance of cats. However, I think that your depiction is good to show what "Ray cats" look like in the imagination of those who hear about them (as a cultural phenomenon), and also might inspire further study into the development of useful bioengineered companion animals. Can you comment on your inspirations & thoughts in creating the piece? — Hubcapp (talk) 17:55, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hubcapp:, thanks! I'm really glad you like the image. I believe that my inspiration for the green glow was probably subconsciously influenced by the trope of green glowing materials representing radioactivity in fiction (for example, the intro to The Simpsons features Homer mishandling a glowing green bar of radioactive material). According to this article, this is probably influenced by the fact that radium can glow in the dark and was used in self-luminous paint in the 1900s. As far as the desert scenery, I chose that because in my mind, ray cats would be found around nuclear waste dump sites like the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in Nevada. Additionally, the way that the Ray Cat was proposed to be used to inform people far in the future made me think of it existing in a post-apocalyptic setting, so I may have been subconsciously influenced by the desert wastelands in the Mad Max franchise. Di (they-them) (talk) 18:05, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I second Hubcapp; that image of surreal green cat is very memorable for me: even after I forgot about Ray Cats altogether, that illustration made me realize I already had read that article before. And TIL it was made by you. :D Ca talk to me! 17:14, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ADL controversy

[edit]

There was already a paragraph about this controversy at the top of the controversies section. No need to have it discussed in two separate spots. Dylanvt (talk) 14:42, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Dylanvt: The two sentences at the top of the section does not go into any detail at all, it does not explain the controversy in depth or why it was considered a controversy or by whom. In particular it doesn't even touch on the political response from people such as AOC or the condemnation from Abraham Foxman. Di (they-them) (talk) 15:14, 22 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Donald Trump and fascism

[edit]

Hi Di, my name is Rollinginhisgrave. I notice you created the page for Comparisons between Donald Trump and fascism, and that the page was nominated for deleting under WP:NPOVFORK, and then kept. Reading the debate, I found it very insufficient. I didn't want to start another AfD discussion so soon after the last without engaging conversation beforehand, I hope it's okay if you're who I've engaged.

The way I have seen sources engage, whether Trump's politics are best described as fascist/fascistic is debate on one position in a broader discussion on how best to characterize his politics. This largely falls along whether it's best to describe him as fascistic vs a right wing populist. You can see an example of the literature being summarized here. For us to have an article covering the characterisation as fascist, and not one on the characterisation as a right wing populist is simply giving UNDUE weight. Generally, splitting off argumentation and positions from the broader debate context (Trumpism) is an NPOV fork. I would analogize this with the abortion debate, and how the arguments around the content of debates around pro-life and pro-choice are not split off into their own articles, but all contained within Abortion debate, to provide due context for each position.

Thanks for your time, Rollinginhisgrave (talk) 14:54, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
