The Future Economic Rural Network (FERN) is a non-governmental, non-profit think tank founded in 2019, initially out of Britain and Ireland.

The organisation focuses on developing alternative business practices for rural communities in the 21st century.

FERN works with stakeholders and rural organisations throughout Europe to create action plans through consensus-based approaches and has had its features appear in the Arc 2020 roadmap project out of Ireland.

History

[edit]

FERN was established in 2019 as a response to increasing challenges facing rural communities across Europe.

The organisation was formed by a coalition of rural business leaders, policy experts, and community advocates seeking to address economic sustainability issues in non-urban areas.

The organisation has gone on to speak in the Houses of Parliament and also become a member of the Conservative Commonwealth Foreign Council (CCFC) part of Conservative Party (UK).

Organisation and structure

[edit]

FERN operates as a network rather than a traditional membership organization. It maintains a core team of advisors and coordinators who facilitate collaboration between various stakeholders. While not requiring formal membership, FERN charges fees for participation in its events and programmes.

The organisation is supported by a network of entrepreneurs and government advisors who contribute expertise and resources to its various initiatives.

Key figures in the creation of the organisation are Nick Lakin, Sophie Ibbotson, Dwayne Grech, Daniel Khazeni-Rad, with initial funding from the Arts Council of England in 2020.

Activities and programmes

[edit]

Policy advocacy

[edit]

FERN engages with policymakers at local, national, and European Union panels to promote rural-focused legislation and programmes in the region. In 2022, the organization contributed to both European Union and British government papers on rural development issues, including land use planning and economic revival strategies.

Rural accelerator programme

[edit]

A key initiative of FERN is its accelerator program designed specifically for rural startups. This program provides mentorship, networking opportunities, and business development support tailored to the unique challenges of establishing businesses in rural environments.

Knowledge exchange

[edit]

The organization facilitates information sharing and cooperation across rural and semi-rural locations throughout Europe. This includes creating platforms for knowledge transfer between communities facing similar challenges in the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and EU member states.

The organisation has also initiated projects in foreign locations including Canada and Japan, helping co-found similar organisations including Inaka Labs, and Canadian Rural Development Foundation (CRDF),

Future threats identification

[edit]

FERN works to identify current and emerging threats to rural environments, societies, and businesses. The organization conducts research and analysis to anticipate challenges and develop proactive solutions.

Focus areas

[edit]

FERN's work centers on several key areas affecting rural communities:

  • Economic sustainability and diversification
  • Technology adoption and digital infrastructure
  • Environmental conservation alongside economic development
  • Community participation and engagement
  • Housing affordability and development
  • Land use planning and management

Impact and contributions

[edit]

Since its founding, FERN has supported the implementation of various rural development programs across Europe. The organization has been recognized for its contributions to policy discussions at both national and EU levels.

FERN's accelerator program has assisted numerous rural startups in establishing sustainable business models appropriate for non-urban settings.
