Biography[]
Shadow of Shinra[]
Born in 1977, Tseng worked for the Shinra Electric Power Company, a corrupt megacorporation that controlled much of the world thanks to its extensive private military and advanced technology. Shinra made use of mako, the life energy of the planet, to further their technological and scientific advancements, as well as to fuel their cities and bases across the world. Shinra's capital was Midgar, a gigantic and highly industrious city. The company's extensive headquarters, called the Shinra Building, was located in the center of Midgar. Tseng was the leader of the Turks, an elite unit of Shinra's General Affairs Division.
The official mandate of the Turks was headhunting candidates to join SOLDIER, a Shinra program that genetically enhanced Shinra Security Officers using mako to transform them into super soldiers known as SOLDIERs. In addition to their official purpose though, the Turks were also charged with a variety of covert assignments, including bodyguard work, surveillance, and assassination. The only other known members of the task force were Reno, Rude, and Cissnei. Tseng took to his work pragmatically, never hesitating to perform heinous acts in the line of duty but never relishing from them either.
Prior to the year 0000, Tseng was tasked with retrieving Aerith, a young girl descended from the Cetra who had escaped Shinra incarceration. The Cetra were the original inhabitants of the planet before humans, and spoke of a "promised land" in their scripture that Shinra intended to reach. As the last of her bloodline, Aerith was vital to Shinra's plans. However, she had to return to the company voluntarily. Tseng tracked her to a house in the slums of Midgar's Sector 5, where she had been taken in by a woman named Elmyra Gainsborough. Aerith refused to go with Tseng though, so he had her put under surveillance for the time being.
Destruction of Sector 7[]
“ | Your activities unwittingly brought you into contact with the Ancient, who is now back in our custody where she belongs. For this, you have my sincerest gratitude. Alas, the sector in which you stand has been condemned. | „ |

On December 12, 0007, Tseng and the Turks were placed in charge of carrying out a horrifying operation. Their goal was to release the mechanism holding the gigantic metallic plate that made up the upper part of Midgar's Sector 7, thus causing the plate to collapse on the slums of the sector and wiping out the whole area in the process. Shinra's purpose behind the operation was to incite another war with Wutai, which they would do so by pinning the blame on an eco-terrorist organization called Avalanche that Shinra alleged was in collusion with Wutai. Locals and members of Avalanche showed up to defend the plate mechanism.
Tseng placed Reno and Rude in charge of releasing the mechanism while he watched over the operation from a helicopter. As he assessed the situation, he noticed none other than Aerith in the streets of the sector slums. Setting his helicopter down, Tseng offered to take Aerith and a little girl in her care named Marlene Wallace to safety if she agreed to finally come back to Shinra for experiments. Reno and Rude were able to pull off their objective and evacuate before the plate fell. After reaching safety, Tseng contacted the Avalanche members still at the plate mechanism and informed them that Aerith was in his custody.
A New Shinra President[]
Tseng fulfilled his end of the bargain by dropping off Marlene Wallace at Elmyra Gainsborough's house in Sector 5. He then handed over Aerith to Shinra's Research and Development Division so that they could begin their tests on her. The following day, Tseng was filling in paperwork in the Turks' office in floor B3 of the Shinra Building. Reno and Rude were both feeling guilty, as the collapse of the plate had cost countless innocent people their lives. Tseng tried to ease their guilt, but quickly gave up when he received a call that the Vice President of Shinra, Rufus Shinra, requested assistance from the Turks.
Later that evening, President Shinra was assassinated in his executive suite by Sephiroth, who had survived his apparent death years prior. At the same time, Avalanche had infiltrated the building and freed Aerith from her containment. Both Sephiroth and Avalanche escaped the building, after which Tseng personally accompanied the Vice President to the executive suite. On the VP's orders, Tseng mobilized Shinra forces in pursuit of Avalanche. Rufus Shinra then had the Shinra executives gather in the executive suite, where he cemented himself as the new company President.
