~ The Night Brigade discussing Nomad. |
The Night Brigade is the overarching antagonistic faction of the Brandon Sanderson novel The Sunlit Man. They are a famously ruthless and advanced mercenary group from the planet of Threnody. Led by the Admiral, they try to accomplish any job they are hired to do with the utmost efficiency. They are known for having the ability to bring back fallen members as Shades. For unknown reasons, they seek the Dawnshard, a powerful artifact in the hand of a worldhopper named Nomad.
History[]
The Night Brigade came from the planet of Threnody, a world famous for its shades, dangerous undead creatures. As the group grew in power, it developed a notorious reputation for ruthlessness and power, being known to destroy entire planets if it met their interests.
At some point they became obsessed with obtaining the Dawnshard, a powerful item in the possession of a worldhopper named Nomad. Although he initially turned himself into them, he soon discovered the Night Brigade would have to take him apart since the shard was bonded with him. He was able to escape, and the Night Brigade began a decades long hunt after him, constantly tracking him to various planets but narrowly being evaded.
They eventually arrived at the planet of Canticle, where they believed Nomad was. Truth-Is-Waiting, a high-ranking spy, went onto the world and discovered Nomad had left. He also discovered a small group of researchers from the planet of Sel called TimeTellers had had Nomad in their possession and had not contacted the Night Brigade. Under the Admiral's orders, Truth had the researchers taken in for torturous interrogations.

- The Admiral - Commander
- Truth-Is-Waiting - Staff Sergeant
Trivia[]
- In early drafts, the group was called the "Dusk Brigade"; however, due to an error of transcription, this was mistaken to be the "Dust Brigade" for many years. Brandon Sanderson eventually renamed it to the "Night Brigade" due to the fact that he already had a character named Dusk in the Cosmere.
- Brandon Sanderson has stated that the Night Brigade will be major characters in a potential novel he is tentatively calling The Night Brigade.
