The Handsome Young Man is the secondary antagonist of the 2021 Netflix series A Tale Dark & Grimm, serving as the main antagonist of the episodes 4, 5, and 6 of the show.

He was voiced by David Henrie, who also happens to be a producer of the series.

Biography[]

The Handsome Young Man is first seen going to the Fisher Widow’s shop to buy a lot of fishes for poor kids of the village. He has a bird on his finger, who flies after the Man kissed him. Gretel and the Widow Fisher immediately fall under his charm.

Gretel, using a ladder, fetches herring from a shelf. She loses her balance and falls, but the man catches her. He remarks on Gretel's life, stating that there was an eventful period. Gretel is embarrassed, but the mysterious man gives her confidence in herself, saying that she doesn't have to hide who she is, and that it's by living many things that one really lives life. The girl is deeply touched by this.

He loads the baskets of fish onto his carriage, while affirming his pride in helping and making happy those in need. He then leaves wishing a good day to the Widow Fisher and Gretel.

He is later in the public square of the village, where he shows his tricks to fix anything the people gives to him, like a ring of a young girl. He then takes the girl in his arms and turns her in the air. Spotting Gretel, he approaches and shows her his golden thread with which he repairs everything. Gretel asks him if he can mend her broken heart, but the Handsome Young Man tells her that she needs something else. He sympathizes, however, with the suffering that Gretel has endured. She then repairs his small sculpture representing a dragon, and makes her turn in the air.

Seeming to want to do the same to others, he mysteriously appears behind Gretel in his carriage, and announces her a great party will take place in his home. The Handsome Young Man shows his house to Gretel, which appears to be a rather great house at the edge of the Black Forest. Gretel is hesitant at first, but accepts when the Man asks her if she is afraid of the forest.

During the road, Gretel hears voice of the rain, saying the Handsome Young Man is actually a warlock. She arrives into his house, where there are many cages with coulombs. She meets the mother of the Man in a room with many magic accessories. The mother has her feet tied by chains. Gretel wants to free her. Touched by this act of kindness, the old lady breaks down and reveals that the Handsome Young Man is in fact a wicked wizard who lures young girls to his house in order to rob their souls to empower his gold thread. He then uses his artifact to fix things in order to attract more girls and so on.

He has been doing this for centuries, keeping his youthful form through his black magic, and after committing his crimes, he erases the memories of his victims. He also keep her mother chained to prevent her of denouncing him. The warlock then comes back with a victim. When she asks where the other guests are, he immobilizes her and renders her body inanimate with his magic. To Gretel's horror, he does exactly what his mother said to her before he came back. The girl’s body dissolves, and because of this, her ring falls and rolls in the hall. It is caught by Gretel.

The warlock suspects that somebody else is in the house. He asks his mother if she hides something, which she answers she is not. The wizard looks under her skirt and into the fireplace where Gretel is hidden, but before he can see her, his mother drops a potion concocted by him to divert his attention. Frustrated, he has to go back to the forest and bring back some fish from the queen. When he is gone, Gretel flees, and promises to all the victims turned into coulomb she will save them.

However, Gretel left handprints on the wall. The warlock notices this while his mother was wiping them off with soap. He recognizes these prints and laughs in a sinister way. So he returns to the village to find Gretel. When he finds her, he congratulates her for not entering the Black Forest because it is too dangerous a place for a young girl like Gretel. He then startles her and laughs at her for her reaction. But the girl, taking her courage in both hands, decides to denounce the crimes of the wizard to the whole village.

But much to her horror, nobody remembers the disappeared girls. Moreover, she realizes the Handsome Young Man has instilled false memories to his victims, who remember him as a kind and helpful person.

Even worse, he corners her in a school and begins to control the minds of the villagers by making them believe that Gretel is a threat to them.  The villagers head for Gretel. At the same time, the ring of one of the wizard's victims begins to glow. Gretel understands that it is magic and pronounces the names of the missing girls one by one. This causes the villagers to gradually regain their memories about them. The warlock tells to not listen her, only to fail. The inhabitants of the village, having realized the true nature of the Handsome Young Man, corner him. Realizing his true identity is revealed, the warlock tries to flee, but is stopped by the villagers.

The latter prepare an oil and snake solution to kill the Handsome Young Man. He begs them to let him go, and as an answer, the Widow Fisher throws a fish in his mouth and Gretel grabs her golden thread and pretends to punch him, which scares the wizard and serving as a karmic revenge for scaring her earlier. The dark warlock is finally thrown in the solution and boils alive. Although the villagers are happy because of his death, Gretel is not really pleased by this.

Personality[]

The Handsome Young Man seems kind, generous and willing to help those in need when he first appears. Because of this, he is very charismatic with the villagers, especially with the young girls. He also seems to sympathize with Gretel because of her eventful life.

However, this turn out to be a pure facade. He is actually a manipulative, psychopathic, and cruel warlock who craves for more power. To this end, he doesn't hesitate to transform souls of innocent girls into doves, and imprison them in front of his big house.

He is also somewhat uncaring and even ungrateful to his mother, as he chained her feet and forbids her to leave the house, despite being the one who taught him the magic in the first place.
