Sergei Gurlukovich (Russian: Сергей Гурлукович) is a minor antagonist in the video game Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He's the former leader of a large group of mercenaries known as the Gurlukovich Mercenaries, father of Olga Gurlukovich, and grandfather of Sunny Gurlukovich.
He was voiced by Osamu Saka in Japanese and the late Earl Boen in English.
Biography[]
Past[]
Sergei Gurlukovich hails from Chelyabinsk-70, Russia, presently known as Snezhinsk. His upbringing in this region shaped his path, leading him to join the Soviet Armed Forces and ascend to the rank of Colonel. During the Cold War era, he assumed leadership of the Spetznaz, forming a lasting bond with his comrade-in-arms, Revolver Ocelot. Over time, Sergei became a father, naming his daughter Olga.
In the wake of the Soviet Union's collapse and the subsequent American takeover of his hometown, Sergei gather former soldiers, a significant portion hailing from the Spetsnaz, who found themselves nowhere to go. This coalition coalesced into a formidable mercenary force, numbering at least a thousand. Motivated by an unwavering patriotism for his country, Sergei's overarching goals were centered on the restoration of Mother Russia to its former glory.
Metal Gear Solid[]
In 2005, Sergei formed an alliance with Liquid Snake and the terrorist group Sons of Big Boss through Ocelot. The objective was to participate in Liquid's uprising against the United States Government on Shadow Moses Island. Eager for the power that Metal Gear REX could provide and the potential to restore Russia, Sergei offered the terrorists a Hind D gunship and a significant portion of the Sons of Big Boss's heavy artillery. This served as an initial payment in exchange for information on the REX project.
Nevertheless, Liquid had distinct objectives, referring Sergei more as a politician than a warrior. Liquid intended for Sergei's forces to support the Genome Soldiers, but this scheme never materialized, given REX's demise orchestrated by Solid Snake. Despite Sergei's eagerness for REX's power, he harbored reservations about its actual potency, expressing skepticism. He asserted that Ocelot and Liquid would only contact him again if REX successfully launched a nuclear strike. However, Sergei never acquired REX due to its destruction and Liquid's demise.
Metal Gear Solid 2[]
In 2007, while Snake was infiltrating a tanker so he can find proof that a new Metal Gear has been created, a large group of mercenaries managed to take over the Tanker. One of the members of the mercenaries is Sergei himself. Sergei was planning to steal the new Metal Gear, so he can use it to rebuild Russia. He also demanded his daughter; Olga to leave the Tanker and head to America as soon as they were successful with taking over. Olga refused as she had nowhere to go. Sergei reminded her that she's pregnant with his grandchild. Despite this, Olga still refuses to leave, but Sergei believed that she did leave the Tanker.
After Marine Commandant Scott Dolph completed his speech about Metal Gear RAY, both Sergei and his closest friend Shalashaska managed to hold Scott Dolph at gunpoint. Both of them threaten that they would blow up the tanker if anybody tried to save the Marine Commandant. However, Shalashaska revealed to Sergei that he never intended on help him rebuild Russia. Sergei questioned if he was still working for Solidus Snake. Enraged that Ocelot betrayed him, Sergei pushed Scott Dolph into Ocelot and attempted to shoot him down. However, Ocelot quickly grabbed his Single Action Army and, with quick reflexes, shot both Colonel Scott Dolph and Sergei Gurlukovich. Scott Dolph was killed on site, but Sergei managed to survive but was lying on the floor in a weaken state. Sergei ended up drowning to death when Ocelot blew up the tanker. Before Sergei died, the last words he said was "Olga".
