Dr. Mike Lasker is the overarching antagonist of the CSI: Miami episode "Broken Home". Lasker is a serial killer of his patients, by means of poisoning to disguise their deaths as natural, in the hopes of feeling powerful from murder.

He's portrayed by Matt Letscher.

Biography[]

Lasker worked as an oncologist in Miami, gaining his patients' and trust and that of their families. In reality, when they were sick from cancer, Lasker used their sickness as a smoke screen to take his opportunities to overdose his patients on pancuronium bromide, a.k.a. Pavulon, a muscle relaxant for the lungs. Seven patients under Lasker's watch died from his poisonings, disguised as respiratory failure. Each time Lasker killed someone, he'd steal a personal possession of theirs as a souvenir. He lost an anklet from one woman he murdered, Lucille Clark, to Justin Montovo, a kleptomaniac boy in his neighborhood. Lasker spiked the drinks of his parents, Dave and Renee, with GHB so he could sneak into the house and steal the anklet back. However, Justin saw him, and Lasker fled.

Justin's spoils were recovered when his babysitter Heather's parents were found murdered at his family's house. The anklet was traced back to Lucille, and Lucille's daughter Amelia confirmed the anklet was hers. Lasker's records of his patients' deaths revealed he was a poisoner, so Lieutenant Horatio Caine appealed to Amelia, insisting the police exhume Lucille to test for toxins. Amelia eventually agreed, and the Pavulon was found in Lucille's toxicology tests. Once a search warrant was executed, the drug was found in Lasker's desk. Lasker tried to argue he was euthanizing his patients out of respect, but Caine bitterly rebuffed him. He was arrested and incarcerated for life.

Lasker is inspired by multiple angel of death serial killers in medicine:
- Efren Saldivar, an American serial killer of patients while working as a respiratory therapist in California, using Pavulon in his murders.
- John Bodkin Adams, a British serial killer of patients while working as a doctor, his murders totaling in the hundreds and Bodkin stealing personal belongings and forging wills for him to inherit from the victims.
- Stephan Letter, a German serial killer of patients while working as a nurse, using paralytics to kill them whether they were sick or healthy.
- Howard Martin, a British serial killer of patients whose deaths he hastened with excessive prescriptions while working as a doctor
