Dembe Zuma is a major protagonist in The Blacklist.

Biography[]
Dembe's family was murdered after his father reported terrorists to the authorities. He was the only surviver and was sold to human traffickers but Raymond Reddington came to his rescue, taking care of him and seeing to his education. Dembe was one of the few people on the planet Raymond genuinely loved and Dembe came to loyally serve as his bodyguard despite his reservations about Raymond's more villainous actions.
Personality[]
Dembe is far less ruthless than Red , often pushing him to consider less violent methods and even trying to convince Red to spare a member of the cartel that ruined his life. Red has referred to Dembe as a good man and even feels unworthy of his loyalty. However Dembe is not perfect as he is complicit in Many of Red's crimes which include Murder and torture. Dembe was also willing to Kidnap Adam Mojtabai in an effort to clear his name when Kate Kaplan framed him for an attempt on Red's life though he let him go quickly.
Dembe was a family man who tried to keep his daughter and granddaughter safe. He claims they are the only people besides Red that he cares about. An example of Dembe's moral failings is that he did nothing to protect Kate from being murdered by Reddington despite being close with her though he felt awful for this. Demb is also a devout Muslim which plays a role in his internal conflict. Above all Dembe is loyal to Red as he has stood by him even though Red has tried to push him into leaving.
