Arlo Sabian is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Dr. May Updale) in The Purge franchise.
A member of the New Founding Fathers of America, Sabian is tasked with orchestrating the escalated atrocities of the Staten Island Purge experiment in order to present its supposed effectiveness to the public. Thus, Sabian is responsible for ensuring the initiation of the Purge as an annual nationwide event alongside the countless deaths they cause.
He was portrayed by Patch Darragh.
Biography[]
Arlo Sabian is the Chief of Staff of the New Founding Fathers of America, after turmoil in the government in the twenty-first century has led to their uprising.
Contrary to Dr. May Updale, who had conceived the idea, Sabian hopes that the experimental Purge in Staten Island would become a success, so to incite more Purges in the following years.
When the first Purge (initially dubbed "The Experiment") starts off with the denizens of Staten Island committing minor criminal activity such as small felonies, misdemeanors, petty crimes, and infractions, as well as throwing block parties, Sabian becomes disappointed. Through corrupt means, Sabian rigs the statistics of the Purge by sending in international mercenaries and extremist hate groups disguised as masked Purgers to make it look like the Purge works through mass chaos.
When Updale discovers this deception, he immediately justifies his actions as the NFFA wanting the Purge to exist in order to maintain a kind of balance by sacrificing low income peoples (including minorities). Sabina then has Updale removed and taken to the streets of Staten Island. In order to cover up his tracks, he has Updale executed and all video evidence of the false Purgers' point of entry deleted.
At the end of the Purge, the militant intervention has affected the Purge statistics well enough for the NFFA to make the event a nationwide annual tradition for the coming years.
He never makes any appearance in the later installments of the franchise; it is unknown what happened to him though it is possible he may have retired from his position, or he lost his position when incumbent President Bracken lost the presidential elections (presumably as Bracken makes no other appearances in the franchise and Warrens is revealed to be the incumbent President during the later installments of the franchise.)
His legacy comes to an end when the Purge is permanently removed after the Ever After Purge phenomenon plunges the whole country into chaos, making Arlo's ambition for the US becomes nothing but a fool's dream. It's a possibility that Sabian may have been killed in the chaos of the Ever After Purge or has gone into hiding in shame from what he and the NFFA have wrought.
Personality[]
On the surface and the public eye, Arlo Sabian is a confident and charismatic statesman for the NFFA. He works side by side with his co-creator May Updale as the Experiment on Staten Island takes place. However, footage from built-in camera contact lens of those participants in the initial Purge both shock and displease Sabian. Eventually, Sabian's true colors come to light after Updale discovers the truth about the rise in murders during the Purge Experiment: that Sabian commissioned mercenaries and racist factions to enter the island dressed as Purge participants to depopulate the lower class of citizens and immigrants in the country. This Sabian justifies as a necessity as the NFFA inherited the social inequality following the economic collapse. It's also implied that Sabian is racist himself as he shows gleeful callousness for whatever ethnic groups get victimized for his, and by extension, the NFFA's plans to succeed.
