“ | President Baptiste was my best customer, but I was in no hurry to meet him. He had gotten a reputation for hacking off the limbs of those who opposed him. His seven year Civil War has been described as "a relentless campaign of sadistic wonton violence". That kind of sums up Andy for me. | „ |
~ Yuri describing Andre Sr. |
Andre Baptiste Sr. is the main antagonist of the 2005 crime drama film, Lord of War. He is the self proclaimed President of Liberia when in actuality he's a tyrannical dictator. He is a regular customer of protagonist, Yuri Orlov; and the father of Andre Baptiste Jr.
He was played by Eamonn Walker and based on Liberian dictator Charles Taylor.
History[]
Introduced as the Dictator of Liberia with cannibalistic tendency, Andre Baptiste Senior was educated in the US and engaged in a violent civil war. Coming into contact with arms dealer, Yuri Orlov, Baptiste quickly grew to like Yuri and chose to make him his main arms dealer. Supplying Yuri with conflict diamonds, he would frequently purchase AK-47's from Yuri for his child soldiers to use in his conflicts.
At an unspecified point, rival arms dealer, Simeon Weisz, would try to do business with Baptiste with the hopes of running Yuri out of the business. Rejecting his offer, Baptiste had Weisz tied up before forcing Yuri to kill his rival, citing revenge for Weisz having killed Yuri's uncle. Several months pass, and Yuri gives up the arms dealing business, only for Baptiste to pay him a visit in his New York City penthouse. Offering Yuri a large supply of conflict diamonds, Yuri agrees to the deal and tries to sell AK-47's to Baptiste's allies in the Sierra Leone. However, Yuri's younger brother, Vitaly, had grown tired of Yuri's indifference to human life, and attempted to sabotage the deal by blowing up half the guns. In the process, Baptiste Junior is killed.
It is unknown how long he remains in power as he is based on Charles Taylor so there is a possibility that a rebel force might overthrow him in the future.
