- "We're dropping you on Horuz. That's one of the dark planets we've been watching."
- ―Saw Gerrera tasks Jyn Erso with her first solo mission
Around 6 BBY,[2] Jyn Erso undertook a solo mission to the planet Horuz with the goal of assassinating Imperial scientist Dorin Bell. Jyn suspected that Saw Gerrera had tasked her with the mission as a way to celebrate her fifteenth birthday. She also thought that Staven had helped convince Gerrera to trust her with a mission following her failure when Gerrera tested her with a detonator kit. Erso brought nothing but her weapon, a modified long-range blaster rifle outfitted with a sniper scope as well as an additional power cell that would overcharge the plasma.[1]
En route to Horuz, Staven briefed Jyn on the terrain, the drop point, and the rendezvous point. Jyn arrived hours early to Bell's small transport unit. When he did arrive, he was killed by land mines, an insurance that Gerrera had planned for. Jyn felt some shame and some relief that she had not been the one to kill Bell.[1]

- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Rebel Rising establishes that the mission to Horuz occurred shortly after Jyn Erso's fifteenth birthday. Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel establishes that Jyn Erso was born one year after the First Battle of Geonosis, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 22 BBY. Therefore Erso was born in 21 BBY, and the mission to Horuz must have occurred sometime around 6 BBY.
