White Space[1] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a broken realm between dimensions of time and space that holds not only Sonic's universe[2], but the totality of the multiverse together, and is where areas that have been torn from their place in space-time by the Time Eater are sent to.
Description[]

Shadow overlooking White Space, from Shadow Generations.
White Space is presented as a completely white and empty void-like limbo that seemingly extends into infinity. There are no internal sounds inside White Space with the exception of the sound of wind blowing and, according to Dr. Eggman, this realm lacks any form of time.[3]
White Space possesses an unspecified relation to the Time Eater. Areas that are torn from their places in their timelines by the Time Eater are automatically send to White Space where these dead and empty areas are drained of color and life. However, such areas in White Space can be restored by speedsters like Sonic; when someone as fast as Sonic moves there, the speed restores space and time, returning color and life.
History[]
Sonic X Shadow Generations[]
Sonic Generations[]
In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Modern Eggman's usage of the Time Eater sent various people and areas across space and time to White Space, including Classic Sonic and Classic Tails. Eventually, he would trap Modern Sonic and his various friends in White Space too. There, Modern Sonic's friends were turned into colorless states. Recovering from his arrival, Sonic would find and restore Green Hill and Modern Tails after running through the former. With Tails having spotted Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary in the distance as well, Modern Sonic headed over there to investigate. Meanwhile, Classic Sonic, whom Modern Tails mistook for Modern Sonic, would pass by, heading to these areas as well.
Unaware of each other, Classic and Modern Sonic would race through the next few areas, restoring them, as well as Amy and Knuckles at the same time. Meanwhile, Classic Sonic would claim the purple Chaos Emerald after coming across and defeating Classic Metal Sonic. Eventually, while passing through a Boss Gate, Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic came across one another, although they initially mistook one another for their reflection in a glass frame. However, Modern Sonic discovered Classic Sonic's identity when they heard Modern Eggman's voice from the Boss Gate's exit. As the exit closed, Classic Sonic made it through in time while Modern Sonic was too late. On the other side, Classic Sonic encountered and defeated Classic Eggman (who is previously known as "Robotnik") and his Death Egg Robot, only for the Time Eater to come by and kidnapped Classic Eggman. Afterward, Modern Sonic and Modern Tails would meet up with Classic Sonic and Classic Tails, the latter two soon figuring out that they were traveling through time and space, explaining their doppelgangers and old locations. With a new Chaos Emerald in hand and the Time Eater on the loose, the Sonics team up to find and stop it.
Continuing through White Space, the Sonics restored Speed Highway, City Escape and Seaside Hill while rescuing Cream, Cheese, Rouge, and Espio in the process. Meanwhile, Sonic found Shadow and got a Chaos Emerald from him after defeating him, although it was revealed in Shadow Generations that he got the fake one that Tails made instead. Eventually, the heroes saw the Time Eater pass by again, although not without ramming into a Chaos Emerald. Noticing that the Time Eater did not like the Emerald, the heroes decided to collect all seven. Afterward, Modern Sonic found Perfect Chaos. Defeating it, Modern Sonic found another Chaos Emerald afterwards. Undeterred, the Sonic duo would visit Crisis City, Rooftop Run and Planet Wisp in White Space too and saved Blaze, Vector and Charmy as well. The Sonic duo also found another Chaos Emerald after restoring Planet Wisp. Meanwhile, Modern Sonic got another one after finding and fighting Silver. Soon after, Modern Sonic found and defeated Modern Eggman and his Egg Dragoon, only for the Time Eater to swoop in and kidnap Modern Eggman.
The Sonic and Tails duos subsequently used the Chaos Emeralds to access the Lair of the Time Eater, though not before Rouge secretly swapped the real yellow Emerald back. There, after a tough final showdown against the Time Eater, the Sonic duo defeated it once and for all. This sent them and their friends back home and returned all the locations in White Space back to their original places in their timelines. Afterward, both doctors were left stuck in an empty White Space, trying to escape.
Shadow Generations[]
The White Space reappears in Shadow Generations, this time as a larger open world environment. The Black Moon can be seen floating high above the ground. It appears that Shadow's side of White Space is connected with Sonic's side, as Shadow, after exploration on Chaos Island, ends up in front of the entrance to City Escape. However, it is not possible to get to Sonic's side from Shadow's side (or vice versa) in-game in either campaign.
Eras[]
White Space is divided into five areas. Three of these areas are dedicated to eras of Sonic's history by video game console generation. Located to the left of the first era is the shop and bonus features, and to the right of the third era is where the player can fight Time Eater at the Lair of the Time Eater once they have collected all the Chaos Emeralds.

Music[]
The main music for White Space, rearranged by Yuzuru Jinma, is a down-tempo, dramatic orchestral-sound instrumental version of All Hail Shadow. The music for the Underground area, arranged by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, is a creepy, spooky orchestral-sound piece with a very subtle remix of Throw It All Away layered into it.

Trivia[]
- In White Space, the melodies at each Stage Entrance are re-orchestrated versions of their regular themes with different and shorter instrumentals.
- A Sonic PICT implies Windmill Isle was also in White Space. [5]
