— Description, Sonic Spinball United States manual.[1]

The Machine (ザマシーン[2] Za Mashīn?) is the third level of the 16-bit version and 8-bit version of Sonic Spinball. It is the heart of the Veg-O-Fortress, where Animals are robotized. Five Chaos Emeralds have to be found to defeat the boss and advance.

Description[]

The Machine is the robotic core of the Veg-O-Fortress. It consists in a giant Badnik production facility. Glassy industrial pipes riddle a stage of churning pistons, electrical arc furnaces, and massive electronics systems. Here, there is also a giant prison for Animals awaiting robotization.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog comes to The Machine after destabilizing Lava Powerhouse. There, he retrieves the Chaos Emeralds needed to destabilize the volcanic system powering the Veg-O-Fortress. Along the way, he also frees the Animals that are trapped in a giant prison. At the top of The Machine. he finds and destroys the Veg-O Machine before advancing to the top of Mount Mobius.

Gameplay[]

The Animal Prison at the center of the table can earn a lot of points, especially once all the cages are opened, awarding half a million points for doing so.

Overview[]

Accessing the Chaos Emeralds from the starting table can be done through either waiting until the entrances rotate around and timing launching Sonic towards them, or using the Power Chambers to force them to stop, making entry easier.

Boss[]

Main article: Veg-O Machine
SpinballTheMachineBoss

The Veg-O Machine, the boss of The Machine, from the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball.

The boss of The Machine is the Veg-O Machine, a machine that transforms Animals into Badniks. To destroy it, the player must smash the tubes which feed animals into this cruel machine, then hop inside of it and smash it up from the inside to overheat it.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a significant feature in early Sonic games, The Machine is the only level that features moving platforms in Sonic Spinball.
  • The small square screens between the Flippers in the lower section indicate the positions that the wheels are in, which the player can use to help get the Chaos Emeralds inside them if not wanting to risk being thrown out of a power chamber towards death.
  • This level is inspired by the scrapped Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Zone, Genocide City Zone.[citation needed]
