The English story prologue found in the original North American and European manuals:

Sonic Slows Down!

Alone in his egg-shaped headquarters, the diabolical Dr. Robotnik paced and pondered.

"There has to be a way to defeat that pesky Sonic The Hedgehog! No matter what I try, he always manages to outrun my traps! Hmm... wait a minute. He outruns my traps. He uses his fantastic speed to defeat my minions. What if I take his speed away?"

Dr. Robotnik created a pair of harmless-looking boots that would slow the running speed of any creature that wears them. Then Dr. Robotnik commanded one of his robots to sneak into Sonic's home and swap his normal sneakers with the boots.

The next morning, Sonic put the boots on without noticing anything was different... until he tried to dash out the door. It was as if his feet were stuck to the ground—he could barely run! He tried to pull the boots off, but no matter how he struggled, they wouldn't come off. Then through the window, he heard Dr. Robotnik's evil laughter.

"How do you like my new invention, Sonic? The only thing that can deactivate those boots is Chaos Emerald power, and the Chaos Emeralds are mine! The only way to get them is to find your way though my Super Labyrinth, and you can't stay there long. Without your famous speed, there's no way you can catch me!"

Sonic thought quickly. "These boots keep my feet from moving fast, but they won't slow down my Super Spin Dash! All right, Robotnik. I'm coming after you!"

Part 1: Dr. Eggman's Plan

"Augh!! That hateful hedgehog!! He's always thwarting my plans, and I won't forgive him!!"

Dr. Eggman, an evil genius who is planning to conquer the world today, is in a bad mood.

Hmmm..... I hate that guy's speed. It's always the speed that gets me... Hmm? Speed...? Yeah, it's speed! This time, I'll win!"

He was still the same weird evil genius scientist who was angry and happy by himself...

Part 2: Sonic the Hedgehog's Mistake

Sonic woke up in the afternoon that day. Tails had just gone out a few days ago, saying that he was going on a travel.

"Sometimes it's good to be alone."

While thinking about that, Sonic got up and put his favorite boots on, but...

"What the?"

His legs felt heavier than usual... He had a bad feeling about that. When Sonic looked closely at the boots... they had Eggman's mark on them!!

Sonic had fallen into Eggman's trap!!

Part 3: Dr. Eggman's Triumphant Face

"Da ha ha ha! Sonic, I got the Chaos Emeralds!!"

Dr. Eggman's triumphant voice echoed over South Island. The evil genius is back on Sonic's home island!!

"Sonic, how are those Dr. Eggman's Deluxe Speed Down Boots?! The boots are made with the Chaos Emeralds' power!! You'll need the Chaos Emeralds to take them off!!"

Dr. Eggman was in a good mood, not noticing he was blurting out a lot of hints!!

Part 4: Adventure in the Great Labyrinth

Sonic tried to run towards Dr. Eggman, but his boots prevented him from running and jumping...

Cracks and roaring sounds were heard on South Island... The construction of Eggmanland, the Great Labyrinth, has begun!!

But Sonic never gives up!!

"I can't run, I can't jump, but I can still make a Spin Attack!! Don't think you won just because of this!!"

Sonic headed towards the Great Labyrinth to recover the Chaos Emeralds.
