Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Nutrition

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nutrition is a project created for 1st year Nutrition students at Charles University First Faculty of Medicine. The intention is to help students to write clearly, assess the quality of sources, and to work together to improve the quality of information available and accessible to those for whom English might not be a first language. Edited pages will be listed below.

Contacts

Most edits ought to happen on Mondays between 12:30 and 14:00 CET (UTC+1) throughout December, 2024. Students will be encouraged to make small edits and check with their teacher before updating a page. Their teacher will typically check any edits from around 16:30 CET. It is of course fine for editors / admin to roll back overenthusiastic or clumsy edits, leaving constructive feedback where possible.

Choose an article

[change source]

Find others who have the same article and discuss your changes with them. Try to decide who will change what ie. distribute tasks.

Make a list of changes

[change source]

Start with the smallest possible change. While doing so, remember to consider the context. Even small changes in wording, which might be improvements, can change the way words relate to one another. Read over the paragraph with your changes.

A change might be the addition of a source rather than an edit as such. Find any references that might help to back up claims made in your article.

Much of your work should be finding, selecting, and reading through references. You may use books in English. Research articles may be pay walled but your teacher may have access.

"Register" your article

[change source]

We have ten users to work with. We will associate each user with a group of students. Each group will work on at least one page and will peer review another group's changes.

Pick up user credentials and create user page

[change source]

Create your user page (you need not add your actual names). Consider working with the sandbox to try to experiment with making edits and working through any changes.

The apostrophe

[change source]

Please change your keyboard on your device. Czech people tend to fill their writing in English with the "backtick apostrophe": this character ` is not an apostrophe. Of course, you shouldn't be making use of contractions in the articles themselves as they are too informal but note that Crohn's disease looks different from Crohn`s disease. We notice.

Be bold, but not "cocky"

[change source]

Wikipedia has a motto: be bold. This means learn by doing. Sometimes, however, it's good to take baby steps. We might begin by adding references where they are lacking. Then we might reword individual sentences. Sometimes changes to one section of paragraph impact another but where that is not the case, we should restrict edits to one. When editing whole paragraphs and sections we should try to break down changes into a greater number of well-described smaller edits. It is hard to look over edits which change two or more sections, and which both add and subtract. We should be particularly careful about deletions. Each deletion should be justified in its own edit. Finally, since editors in this project are not native speakers, edits on the level of language (not just sources), should be checked over with peers and a teacher before they are published.

These articles should first be created in a user sandbox (see example and some tips on my own user sandbox).
