Queen of the blocks

This year I've decided I could be crowned Queen of the blocks as I get into tackling some of those oldie but goodie projects that I have lying around. I like that, oldies but goodies sounds so much better than UFO's.
I did think about what I wanted to work on and I'd like to keep my options open but I got to thinking about the list, my quilting bucket list actually. I'd like to finish the Nearly Insane one day so I'll try to make blocks more regularly.

I'll continue to make panels for the vine quilt. I'm half way through the latest panel. This is one of my bucket list quilts. The one at the top actually.
I'm having so much fun with the Cherry Tree blocks that I'll try to keep these going regularly. I'm really into the fabrics I'm using. This is block 3. Have you got a quilt that you absolutely have to make one day? I'd love to know what it is. Oh and I promised myself to work on the Baltimore. That's a have to finish quilt.
We've had a few trips out and about, not sure it was a good idea to go into Sydney while the sales were on but I enjoyed wandering around without a purpose. The next two photos are from The Queen Victoria building, I love watching the clock which has all these figures coming out and rotating around when it hits the hour.
I just love stained glass windows. If you ever get to the building, be sure to go to the top level to view the carved jade carriage.
I wasn't very good at supporting the retailers, I only came home with a book and this small jewellery pouch. I liked the shape and thought that one day, I may have a go at making a sewing sized one.

Its all about the fabric

First of all, I knocked off another nearly insane block, #21For fabric Friday, I'm showing the most expensive and special fabrics I'm hoarding. All of these except the red and yellow are American folk art. The one on the bottom right is a French border fabric, I love it but it's rather firm in texture.I had fun making up a couple of things from the show last week. I got a pouch pattern from Studio Mio which was very simple and quick to whip up. I like to make my bag patterns on freezer paper so that I can iron it to the fabric then cut around, easy peasy.
Here it is and I shamelessly copied the fabric idea from Jean who made one as a giveaway that Cathy was lucky to win. I don't miss much, lol.
Love the spring strip in the top, a squeeze opens it.
I got to use a snippet of my Aunty Cookie fabric and made this bucket from a free tutorial that Jodie from Ric Rac has on her blog. It was a quick thing to make also and is a decent size, 6" in diameter.
I couldn't resist this photo doing the rounds in email. Swine flu has got closer to home.

Busy sewing again

I've been needing a little nudge to get into some sewing again. I think it's the wet cold weather slowing me down. I didn't know what I felt like doing until Ranette gave me a little nudge to get back to my Nearly Insane blocks. Thank you Ranette, it was just what I needed. They are not as distorted as they look, honestly, it's the angles.

Block 29 Block 9
Block 11
I have been busy hand quilting, mainly in the evenings and sometimes it takes me a little while and much wrestling of the quilt to see where I last finished. Here's my tip, tie a bright ribbon to a rust proof safety pin and pin where you finished last. Much easier to spot where you need to go back next time you pick it up.

Another red and green quilt

There's not a lot of sewing going on at Quiltsalott this week so I'll show you a quilt I finished last year in the red and green. You'll probably recognise this quilt if you are a fan of Piece O' Cake designs. It's in their book Flowering Favourites which is now out of print You may be able to pick it up somewhere. I hand quilted this in a basic grid design, it has a cotton batting so it has that lovely texture I love. You can click on the photo to get a closer look.
This is all I managed on the machine this week, three more nearly insane blocks, #'s 12, 15 and 16
A big thanks to Kathie who told people about me and also to those who visited and left some very kind comments. I appreciate it! Also thanks to other bloggers who have been so helpful to me when I've needed it, I have some basic computer skills and this is still a learning process for me.

Have a great weekend, Janet

Red and white, Nearly Insane

Here's my container that I keep some of my red and whites in for a special project, you see I'm using these to make the Nearly Insane quilt that I saw here. About the same time I discovered Hanne's blog and she was doing the same colourway. She's finished her quilt now and it is fabulous. Take a look at her finished quilt. These small 6" blocks are a challenge! Starting from the top left and going clockwise, , the block numbers are 1,2,3,4,5 and 6
The blocks below are 8,10,13,14,30,31 #8 was the really insane one!
Blocks 33,40,48,54,55,57

Blocks 60,61,66,67,78,82

For foundation piecing, I'm using a stitch and tear which gives me good accuracy, I can see through it and it tears off really easily. I cut it to size, Iron it flat and run it through my photocopier. Some blocks I have to reverse the image. I then cut apart the pieces that I want to foundation piece. The other parts of the block are just machine pieced.

Now that I've finished my Christmas sewing, I'm hoping I can get some more blocks done.
I hope you are all finding a little time for yourselves this week.
Janet
